Perhaps this is an old issue here, but being new, just curious what people use here since a lot of talk centers around Photoshop.

I did search the Forums and found a few old threads that asked similar questions. But seeing as how I just upgraded to a new version of PhotoImpact I was wondering. Chalk it up to the 'newbie syndrome' if you have to. I can deal with that. If you respond, please include current version and not just brand name. Thanks!

I started off with paint shop pro, but pretty much all tips, tricks and tutorials seemed to be for photoshop.
I am now using the latest ps version - ps cs 2.

Not quite being able to bring myself to spend the big bucks on PS CS and not finding the interface of PSE 3 very intuitive (for me at least) I use the following:

RAW Shooter Essentials
MS Digital Image Suite 10 (Image Pro and Image Library)

I also occasionaly use:

Thumbsplus 7 (for certain stuff it does well)
Nikon Capture (RAW converter but not as easy as RSE above)
Neatimage
Noiseware
PSE 3 (still trying to like it so I can eventually go to PS CS)

And for printing I like PhotoPrint (came with my Canon printer)

I use PhotoImpact 10 as the base program with about 15 or so PhotoShop filters/plug-ins from Flaming Pear. I have found over the years (I started with version 4) that there is nothing that a Photoshop user can do that I can't do in PhotoImpact just as well and it is a fraction of the cost - version 10 is 89.00 US new.

I use Photoshop Elements 2 and now Version 3. They do almost all the same things as Photoshop and cost much less.

I use The GIMP. It's free, open source, and powerful. It's also pretty easy to use (IMO, contrary to what many say), if you can open your mind to its very different usage of windows.

Download the Windows version from here. (You need to install GTK+ and then the GIMP.)

I like GIMP. It's free. It's easy. And it works.

Currently on Day 3 of my 30-day CS2 trial. I will very likely upgrade at the end of the 30 days.

Photoshop 7.0 I have Jasc Paintshop Pro somewhere around here. Maybe I should give it a try.

Don't forget about the online book:
Grokking the GIMP - Learning Advanced Image Editing Techniques. If you really want to learn how to use the GIMP in depth, this is a great resource.

I have been using PhotoImpact 10. I have PhotoShop 7.0, but it is much harder to learn. I do use PS7.0 to resize for DPC as it seems I get a larger image to post that way. The lasso tool in PhotoImpact 10 is the best...leaves PS7.0's lasso in the dust.

Believe it or not, I use ArcSoft Photo Base 3, which came with my scanner. I also use picture cooler to reduce noise if I have to. I have a copy of Photoshop 7.0, but I rarely use it. I prefer my shots to be as close to out-of-camera as possible. I usually just adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation.

Some think I use Photoshop 7.0 a lot, with the occasional use of neat image, virtual photographer plug-in, or any number of assorted actions, but all my pictures here are straight out of the camera - honest!
