Does this sound familiar to any Canon 20D owners?

I turned my camera on and the battery indicator said that my batteries needed charging. I have two Canon Li-ion battery packs in a battery grip and it's never given me troubles before. I took the batteries out and put the battery mag in with AA batteries and it seemed fine, but once I pushed the shutter button down my camera died and said that my batteries were dead. Can anyone give me any advice? I was going through my equipment because someone just called me wanting to do a photo shoot of their band and it's scheduled in TWO HOURS! HELP!

Have you put your Lithium batteries in the body themselves?

Do you have an ac adapter that you can plug in and try using the camera?

I wish I did, but no :(

All I have with me is the camera, battery pack, and a flash

Try to clean the contacts of the battery pack with an eraser, maybe they are dirty? Also just try without the battery pack and try just one battery.

try pulling out both batteries out (the regular battery and the backup battery) for a few minutes, this usually clears any settings that the camera has but it sometimes clears these bugs up

Don't know if this may be part of the problem, but I just read this in another thread on this site:

A large number of BG-E2 battery grips were manufactured defective, and Canon will be putting out a recall at the end of the month. If you order a grip, check the tightness of your screw dial after using it for a bit, and see if it is abnormally loose. Also, put your heaviest lens on the camera, hold it vertically by the grip alone, and keep an eye on your battery meter. If you suddenly show low power on full batteries, or it disconnects entirely, you have a defective BG-E2.

I'll have to try putting them in the body. I just hope nothing is wrong with my battery pack. It's brand new!

Ehh.. It does it when the battery is in the body too!

You should have hoped that it was the problem with the battery pack

Make sure the problem isn't with the lens. I've had stranger things happen.

Are you using third party batteries? Try using the Canon branded one that came with the camera, freshly charged, by itself in the camera without the grip. If that doesn't work call the Canon support number.

Yep, this has been a well known problem since the camera/grip was introduced. It's unclear how much Canon is going to do though. The service notice is on the Canon website.
