Notice our (DPC) challenge description:
Originally posted by Challenge Details: Silhouettes are created by backlit subjects, which causes them to appear solid and without much detail. Submit your best silhouette taken this week! |
So, dare to not backlight your subject? Anyone?

I'm not sure of the "right" way but I got some interesting results by shooting at fairly fast speed (1/500 +) with my subject in the foreground into the sun. Had to pass the shots through neatimage as they were noisy even though I used asa100. Other techniques? |

QUESTION!!!!
Can someone please clarify DPC definition of silhoette?
Does photographing a "shadow" count? as it is technically a silhoette.
sil·hou·ette Audio pronunciation of "silhouette" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sl-t)
n.
1. A drawing consisting of the outline of something, especially a human profile, filled in with a solid color.
2. An outline that appears dark against a light background. See Synonyms at outline.

i dont think a shadow really qualifies...but taking a photo of a person with light behind them( makeing subject look like it is a shadow) will better fit the description...just MHO and my personal intereption of the challenge...

I'd suggest a look at the first silhouette challenge, and check out how voters voted on the entries.
If you want a ribbon, match your entry as closely as you can to what won then. If you want to explore what's possible, and perhaps challenge what might be existing preconceptions as to what a silhouette is or isn't, then perhaps prepare for a low score, play around and have fun. There might be surprises, and the two points above may not be so incongruous to each other, I suppose.
I know which way I'm going to go. Actually, I know which way I went with this already...

most of my silhouette photos were taken on 1/18sec shutter, no flash iso 100..which is better if the backlight is fairly bright(such as setting sun)

I didn't even notice we were discussing a current challenge ... : )
It's amazing how many of my shots turn out as silhouettes, whether I intended them to or not : ( |

I loved your accidental letter - - you'd get another 10 from me if you were to submit something like this again. But then again, you ended up 99th...

99th...Did you ever hear that joke about the rasta who went for a job interview, and the 99 test?
Hey, I want a ribbon, but I know I'm just too sucky (that a legal word here?) to do better than say, 99th. So I'm getting used to it.
