| If someone were looking to buy a camera that was under $1,000.....what would you reccommend? What is your favorite brand? Your favorite model? What has the most bang for its buck? |

Well, I'm very happy with my D70 and if was was to buy another camera then it would certainly be another D70. Of course there are also the D70s and D50.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20. It recently won the TIPA Award in the digital long zoom class.

It depends on what you're looking for.
If you're looking for a DSLR, in the states you can find the Canon Rebel (300D is around 799, the XT $999, the Pentax *ist ($899), Nikon D50 ($899) are around that or a little under. These cameras all come with a kit lens, and you'd have to buy a different lens for telephoto.
Otherwise, there are LOTS of good cameras below $1000. Go to your local camera store and looka t what YOU like and what fits your needs.

Are you looking to get a dSLR (like a 300d or D70) or stick with the all-in-one digicam?

If you're looking at DSLR systems, I'd recommend either the Canon Rebel XT or the Olympus E-300 Evolt for consideration.

I think I'd like the DSLR system. I like the idea of being able to change the lenses depending on what kind of photos I want to take....though it will likely take me quite a while to work up the budget for extra lenses :-) |

you can also rent lenses to fit your budget better. I reccommend the 350D XT. or anything that canon makes.

I just found out (yeah, I'm slow) that I COULD concievably by different lenses/filters for my camera....with an adapter, of course.
But is it worth it? The only place I can find them is on Ebay cause my camera is discontinued. I don't want to waste money I could be saving for a new camera....but a new one might be a ways down the road and I'd like to improve my shots sooner than that.

DSLR cost a lot of money (with the lenses of course),much more than $ 1000.

or you could look on ebay for someone selling a camera... you could also look on ebay for lenses... i know a lot of people that use used lenses and cameras and are perfectly happy. Just a suggestion!!

I'm a Nikon D70 user and I love my camera, but it really honestly doesn't matter too much which you go with (Nikon or Canon), though I would suggest sticking to one of those two if you are going DSLR. Other brands like Pentax and Olympus just don't have the market share anymore and I would personally be weary of buying into a system that may or may not run into financial problems in the forseeable future. Remember that when you get into a DSLR, you are making a long-term (and monetary) investment into it.
I love my D70 and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat if I had to decide again now, but for someone not partial to either system, I would consider capitalizing on the measurebaters selling off their Canon 300Ds so they can upgrade to the 350XT. The 300D is a more-than-capable DSLR and the Canon system will never fade away. |

Kinda depends on why you want a new camera. if you're generally happy with your camera (speed, image quality, etc.) and all you really want is more reach, wider shots, or a fisheye, then the adapter/lenses for your camera might be all you need. however, if you want a camera that can work in lower light, gives you greater control of depth of field, and such, then a dslr is probably a better bet. nikon, canon, pentax, whatever.. they're all good. except for canon. haha.. jk. |
