Who thinks their highest rated photo isn't their best? I think my free study photo I just entered is by far better than my wheels challenge photo. I thought for sure I was going to get over a 6 with this photo.

Wheels - 5.964 -

Free Study VIII - 5.960 -

Oh well. Thanks everyone for the comments and good luck.

None of my highest scoring photos are my 'best'.
04/26/2005 04:53:19 AM · #3
This is my highest rated and best "placed" photo. It is by far, not my best shot!

I don't really like my highest rated shot

but I am fond of some shots that I took that did much, much worse. Namely...
, and .

I'm not too wrapped up in taking shots that do wonderfully well on DPC, as I like to shoot for what I like. However, it would be nice to learn how to combine the two :-)

Nope. My best are still on film. Learning though. Its hard to translate the effects different films bring into the digital world.

Nope, my best DPC submissions are not my highest rated but they are above my average score.

i thought my free study was definately one of my best, although it finished dead in the middle of the pack.

my highest rated so far is a beautiful portrait of my gf which I intend to hang on the wall.

My highest rated is technically my best, but I prefer others I have taken by far for artistic reasons.

My preference was not even entered in a contest.

My entry for Best Of 2004 was also voted my higest so far.

My highest scoring photo is considerably inferior to several that have scored very low, inferior in almost every respect.
This one scored over 6

while this one scored well under 5

Part of this is the appropriateness of the image for the challenge. If the voters do not see your vision of the challenge, it will score very poorly, regardless of composition and quality.
The first image was made for the 'School Days' challenge and fit the voters vision perfectly, scoring well despite a poor composition and presentation.
The second was for the 'Lines' challenge and the voters could not or would not see the dramatic lines of the image.
The bottom line for a consistantly good DPC score is to go for the insipid subject, in a conventional composition, and make it pretty.
In general this is true, but occasionally something exciting sneaks through despite the general voting trends.
DPC voters represent a fair cross section of the general public and their judgement is unerring in that regard. A large part of being a 'good' photographer is satisfying the taste of the general public.

This is my highest entry. I don't enter many challenges though. :)

6.656 - Verrazano Twilight

However, I think this is my best submitted shot. It only scored 5.889

Valley Of The Dead

I definitely DO NOT think my highest rated is my best:

...but apparently I'll be stuck with it for a long time to come.
=(

No doubt about it. My highest rated photo is definitely not my best. Lots of technical problems but it touched people on an emotional level which is why it scored so high.

no, i have a high score in the jewelry challenge but i wouldnt consider a photo mulled over with PS a good photo. I think what comes out of the camera is better.

So far, I have been very fairly judged! My highest is my best to date!

I agree, the bottom line is if you wish to engage commercially, then this is an way to test public preferences. If not, then the votes don't matter.

My highest and best
* I just ordered as a 16x24 print... I'm framing it and placing it in my office. It's my favorite so far of all portraits of my pups.

My second highest
* From the Free Study challenge... I think it's not as good as my portrait above, but was definately a lot more challenging!

I like my highest the best.

Kyebosh - excellent photo! I just added it to my favorites. I wish I could get a sky like that over here! Beautiful colors.

clarmore...that one of your pups was my favorite of that challenge!
04/26/2005 06:19:26 AM · #22
Its difficult for me to pick my best, but my highest rated is not a contender for sure
04/26/2005 06:32:26 AM · #23
No, my favorite photographs are not those which received the highest ratings.

Of those photographs I've entered into challenges here I'm most fond of these two (both scored circa 6,2):

However, these two are my highest rated photos (both just above 7):
