Strange problem here. My 420EX is firing when I press the shutter on my 20D, but the illiumination it is providing is not evident in the picture.
For example, in a living room at night, in M mode, at 1/125 s, f/4.0, without flash, the frame is dark. Same settings with the 420EX: still dark. In contrast, the on-board flash illuminates the scene just fine.
Same when trying to get fill flash in Av or Tv modes: absolutely no difference between the flashed image and the non.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe the flash pulse is out of sync with the shutter?
Does anyone have any ideas???? Much appreciated. |

What's your flash exposure compensation set at ?

| ive tried it right at 0 and also cranking it up to see if i could see an effect. i've also tried putting in fresh new batteries. |

how about high speed or not.
And the slave setting or not ?
If you use the DoF preview, does the flash pulse ?

Posibly the flash firing that you're seeing is only a pre-flash. It may not be firing during the exposure.
Have you tried setting both the camera and the flash back to defaults?

| I experienced this problem one time.. the preflash is firing but the exposing flash is not. It's probably a bad/loose connection between the flash and the camera. |

have tried with hi speed and not. slave setting and not.
have not tried the dof preview.
kirbic have not tried setting the camera to defaults.
john, that's a possibility.
i will have to investigate further tomorrow as it's bed time unfortunately.
thanks for the ideas to try. will update tomorrow.

this happened to me too ... $200.00 and 2 weeks at Canon later, everything works fine (it was my camera, not the flash).

This might be a silly question, but is the 420EX actually firing? If not, then the bulb is out, if so, consider if it is in synch with the shutter relase. If not return.
