Let me start this off with a disclaimer: I don't mean any disrespect here.
Is it just me or are the winners of the pet portrait boring? I mean isn't a portrait suposed to envoke the esence of the subject? Aren't you suposed to see the image and get a sense of the person, or pet in our case? I mean anyonecan nicely light a mugshot, but a true image maker should be able to show the viewer what their subject is like, right?
I saw a few portraits that I really thought showed how their pet personality. That to me is why you make a portrait. Getting to see inside as well as outside of the subject. Am I wong here, or just missing something???

Well the voting is done by a large number of people and those large number of people seem to think that the top three winners were the best out of the competition. That doesnt mean you have to agree with the choices, but it seems the majority do not agree with you.

Majority rules. There is no right or wrong, there is just different tastes.

Funny, I see a lot of character in all 3 of the ribbon-winning shots.
Each invokes a sense of who they are, to me anyway.

I think the blue ribbon winner looks just like an Audrey Hepburn (dog look-alike) portrait(of course, if you're young, you may be clueless to who I'm talking about). I loved it!

Dear thefotog,

First of all you attacked me in pm because I said that your photo was cute but not my idea of a portrait. I assume you also did that to the many other people who said the exact same thing to you. You got plenty of comments on your photo, but obviously they had little impact on you.

Next you started a thread wanting to know why your photo didn't do better than it did. You had a number of very good, detailed replies, but I guess they didn't get through to you, either.

Now you're knocking the winners - WHY???

Will you ever accept somebody else's opinion?

I would agree some what. While the ribbon winnders are very nice shots, I know of atleast 2 other shots that stood out to me and I was *SHOCKED* that they were not in the Top 10 and were almost not even in the Top 20.

They were:

19th Place

20th Place

The fact that these shots weren't ribbon winners or even ranked in the Top 10 is pretty sad. Sure #19 is cropped a little tight, but they are both excellent pet portraits... a dogs element is having fun outdoors... not in front of a fake backdrop.

I think you have to really love pets, and consider them as friends not as just animals, to feel the blue ribbon has a great character!

Why bother with what majority says? They won, congratulate them and move on.

I agree that shots 2&3 both show character and were technically great. However, I was a little surprised about 1...

It's a beautiful dog and it really shows the dog's personality. However, it has a few technical flaws whereas, I saw many other photos that were technically great and showed personality (including those mentioned by Sage below). The right side and part of his nose is over-exposed, his left eye and ears look like they were overly dodged... very grainy looking. Just seems odd for a photography contest that it won... even though I do believe it deserves a very high place.

I guess it's just hard to determine what majority will decide on will win a contest... sometimes it will be the creatity, technical details, or the actual subject matter. Gives us something to look forward to at Midnight when the results are in. =)

Corection you said "it isn't a portrait" not it isn't your idea of a portrait. Also if you'd like me to put my PM to you up for everyone to read I have no problem with that. It wasn't mean or vendictive like you keep trying to make it out to be. So please stop stomping in with "Oh the thefotog your such a mean bad person!"

That's all beside the point. I am curious and ask alot of questions. It works for me. If living in a hole and never looking out of it is your cup of the then so be it.

I'm interested in expanding, learning, and questioning. So I'll keep asking questions hoping to stir things up, maybe learn something.

Lastly I understand the majority thing. This website is based on it, societies have it, heck I think theres this thing called democracy. I'm not knocking it I'm just questioning norms. I mean would we be where we are as a people if no one asked why?????????????
