I'm new to photography with a SLR and wondering if anyone would help me with ideas of safe ways to take pics of the eclipse on Friday.

Do not look at the eclipse with your bare eyes or through the viewfinder. It can fry your sensor as well as your eyes.

MrEclipse has some good advice on eclipse photography.

In a nutshell you basically need a solar filter on the camera so you dont fry the sensor.

here are a few links for solar filter film, its sorta expensive, but you can make your own filters for either a camera or binoculars
