This is the first portrait I've really ever did.
What do you think.

This is for a freinds engagement

Not bad. Not bad at all.
The effect you used is maybe a lill' too much for me.
But I mean the picture in itself is pretty great. you're on a good track! I like it!

Left you a comment on the photo too. I like the idea a lot, and the expressions are wonderful. I would crop the top a little more, and I would like to see a bit more of the lady's face.

Yes nice composition and expression but the effect a little too heavy for me. Would have liked to see more of the faces with the highlight area blown out a little more to compensate that. Maybe just a tighter crop to bring them in more.

I'll be brave & disagree a little. I think the crop is just fine. I also think you see plenty of the girl's face, but not enough of the guy's. The effect would work better if the highlighted area wasn't so strong, forcing the extra dark surround. That way, you could broaden the highlight a little without making the center seem overexposed.

Having said all that, I like the shot & the effect. I bet your clients will love it. Keep it up & show us some more!

Thanks for all your great comments and help.
Here is another one I worked on tonight.

I'll be braver and blunt - the girl looks like a disembodied head.
Not trying to sound mean - that was just my first reaction and as I stared at the photo longer, it didn't change. Just my unprofessional opinion, but I would at least show some of her neck.

Now the second round looks great. I like the middle one best.

Overall - you rocked! I'm sure they will love them.

LOL! I didn't get that impression, but there is one thing I'd like to complain about. No doubt this is my age showing thru, and I realize it's the fashion, but is that really the best this guy's hair can look? No reflection on you, Corwin, just social commentary.

I think it's lovely, for what it is. They look so REAL in their caring for each other. I'd try to give us at least the hint of more on the side of her face. Also, I'd use an ampersand (&) instead of the word "and", and I'd make her initial as large as his...

Robt.

It's your age. Do a google image search for men's hairstyles...

Um - his hair just looks like... Fresh out of the shower.

And the hairstyles you just cut and pasted here - I've seen none of them in public.

The guy in the portrait... well his hair is just gross. He just failed at doing the messy look because his appears incredibly limp.

I like the portraits though. Perhaps a reflector underneath would soften the harsh shadows under their noses and eye brows, and perhaps moving the light source to a less abrupt spot would help as well.

Well you lost me on your response. Are you talking about the guy in the portrait when you say "Fresh out of the shower" and "just gross"?

I was just pointing out (in a moderately amusing attempt) that to me, todays styles (mens AND womens) don't look like much more than the "just woke up" look. But what do I know about hair anyway? Mine's all but extinct. :(

ok - to clarify:

The guy in the picture with the girl - his hair sucks. period. gross. still wet from the shower. no brush. no hair product. no effort.

The hair in the pictures that you posted as "modern hairstyles" are not, in fact, worn by anyone that I've ever met. And I'd like to think that at 21 I'm still young enough to realize what's in and what isn't.

But those pictures of the crazy hairstlyes did make me laugh. Could you imagine if people really did have that hair? Sick.

I hear ya. It's like the New York or Paris fashion shows where you see ultra-thin models wearing outlandish dresses & clothing and you NEVER see anyone wearing that crazy stuff in daily life - not even in Hollyweird.

Back to the original thread - can we sum it up by saying to the photog: Have the guy get a new do, give her a neck and fix the lettering (per bear_music's suggestions)? :)

In this set, I would like to see numbers 2 & 3 combined (tight crop, color version). Really nice work.

I like the first photo best but the way you used the technique better in all of the following three.

BTW, I have hair galore and right now it looks a bit like the models to the far right....having just woke up. So these styles do exist in real life, however unintentionaly.

Again thank you for all your suggestions.
Keep them comingâ€Â¦

About the hair... I didn't really have any control about what they wore or how the presented them selves. The couple is only 20 so they probably think the hairstyle is just right.

I will again use you suggestions and submit somemore.

I think the pose in this shot is the best (aside from the lack of neck). It's the cutest.

Maybe you could work on the original of this and lighten to give some neck. Plus, I'm not a big fan of soft-focus. Could you sharpen it just a bit? (Just personal taste thou.)

I'm sure the couple will be delighted with their photos!

:) Paula

I found this comment just so annoying ahaha. Sick? Lord. And I see those hairstyles all the time. It's called Metrosexual around here! Just such a strange turn of the thread to start talking about hairstyles... I think the portrait is fine, could be better, could be worse.
