Sorry I don't have the Nikon D70 battery grip, but I do have the Canon 20D battery grip. It works very well. You can shoot vertical and horizontal. You can store two batteries. I prefer the fuller hand grip. It makes the camera heavier but, it is worth the benefits. I have to say that I have never run out battery power anywhere. I have the Nikon D70 and will probably buy the grip when it is available.
I did the NYC St. Patricks Day Parade a few weeks ago. The two batteries lasted forever. The parade is over 6 hours long and I took over 2,000 images. Enough said... |

I have never had a need for an extra battery. Mine will last over 1000 shots, why pay $170 for extra weight?

If you shoot lots of portrait shots, the vertical grip make a world of difference. I spent a weekend taking lots of shots, about 4,000 over two 5-hour periods - having to juggle batteries was not fun. |

back to the topic at hand....
i dunno. i would like a vertical shutter, but don't need that much battery. and this kind of looks cheesy with those extra cables running around the outside of the body. looks like it would be easy to accidentally pull something out of whack.
i just want a good hand strap for the d70. couldn't find one a while back. maybe i should look again....

It was a soccer tournament with lots of kids. I tried to make sure I got every kid.
4 rounds per day, plus the finals. Every so often, I would squeeze off a multi-burst, so it was not hard to shoot 6 or 7 shots in 20 seconds.
Actually, each game day lasted about 8 hours, so I guess it's more like 4,000/16 hr; but most of the shots were from during the games...
Continuous focusing on the action certainly added to the battery drain...

The bulky looking cable is for the extra battery. If you only wanted the vertical grip and shutter release, there's just the thin cable going from the grip to the D70's IR detector. Not invisible, but not too bad...
I've been debating getting some kind of a vertical grip (buy or build) for the D70. But I also wanted a right-angle viewfinder so I can take waist-level photography. Choices choices choices... |

Actually, no. I was hoping for something that attached at the tripod mount and at the right strap mount that would keep the camera in the palm of my hand... kinda like this

there is a bonus with the added weight, when using a heavy lens like the 70-200L f2.8 IS with the 20D then the grip is essential, as the camera is to small to ballance a big lens like that, and when using the IS and flash the extra battery does come in handy. and the best feature is the vertical hold with the shutter button, speed dial, focus prefix and focuspoint select buttons.
and some of us got big hands wich the camera just don´t fit into without the grip ;)

So what is wrong with that one?

I have just ordered one.
I think it is going to be a better way to handle my D70 I really had some trouble finding a good position to take vertical pictures.
I will stay with the IR release there is no way I am sending my D70 for modification and loose my warranty.
I think that if you are looking for a way to get a better hand on your d70 you found your match.
But 135$ for modification rounds up to 300$ total....not worth it!
Peace |

i found that while i was trying to post a photo to emphasize my point.
i had been so intent on finding something nikon-specific that it wasn't until i just searched for "hand strap" that i found something that might work.
