Just a question on commenting... could comments be at least a little helpful and constructive instead of hurtful and sarcastic? I mean really! Some of you that comment hurtful things have no room to be so distasteful. This is a place to learn and have fun... is it not?

Yep. I've noticed on a lot of photos that the comments have bee less than constructive. |

there will always be chumps, but you can do your part to counterbalance World Chumpiness by leaving constructive, substantive comments! dont delay, comment today!

Take offense to a hurtful remark and you get pounded by everyone else defending them. I know it is hard to do but we have to ignore them. I guess that will have to be my plan of action in the future. I promise you that I will never intentionally make such remarks. You are right though, this should be a fun place where we learn something. I get the feeling that some of these folks think that is a way to have fun. |

I agree if people are going to criticise a picture they should make there comments constructive and think about what they are going to say before they say it. Having said this I think a little more constructive criticism would benefit everybody. My last two photos have generated little criticism and as I am new to photography, it is nice to know what people like about my photos. But I can̢۪t help thinking it would be more helpful to know where I am going wrong. |

it seems a little bit ironic though to complain about the quality of the comments one is getting, yet not leave any comments yourself. no comments are worse than poor comments, imo. 8 )

In other words, don't just say "this sucks", say "this sucks because....." Simple enough and I can agree to that. |

Since I am new, I've yet to make a comments on every picture I vote on. But I do try to comment as best I can to as many as possible. Sometimes I just don't care for a picture, but have no real reason to explain or constructive critisism to offer. So therefore I don't leave a comment... personally I'd rather someone not comment on my photo if they don't like it and have nothing constructive to offer me on it.

I agree. If I can think of a way to make the photo better, I will comment. Most of my comments consist of why I like the photo and questions about the techniques or the photo itself. Maybe I am wrong but if I do not like a photo I will rate it as low as I think it deserves to be rated without a comment. Doesn't that pretty much speak for itself without having to say something that I don't want to say? There are also times that I think it is a good photo yet it doesn't jump out at me. Why leave a comment if you have nothing to say? |

I hate to name names, but who is making "hurtful" comments, and what are they saying? Every week there seems to be some post about how the comments being made are no good. Example are never really given, so it makes me wonder if my comments are being misunderstood. I make an effort to say something constructive about each one, though maybe someone could take it as hurtful?
If comments are outright hurtful, then I feel something should be done.

This could be more of a suggestion than just a reply. But anyway, what if we had the box to fill in comments but also had some radio buttons to check off. For instance you'd have: Good,Medium, Bad choices for say, contrast, lighting, composition, color quality(unless black and white)etc... then if someone is in a hurry they can at least leave a clue as to what they liked/didn't like about the photo, with a few quick clicks.
Just an idea...

That̢۪s true but it takes me long enough to vote on all the submissions, due to my crap connection, and my distinct lack of knowledge of photography isn̢۪t helping either. :) |

I like that idea! I'm not sure how the guys running the site will like all the extra work, but I do really like the idea.

I'm not sure naming names would be very beneficial. It would probably only start a verbal war that can't be won by anyone. But I will say that the ones that I've seen haven't bothered to come into this forum and post anything in response to my question... so I feel that says alot in itself. They just don't care if they are hurtful and they probably have a "God" complex... you can't win in an argument with someone like that.

Shannon, you and I are in total agreement on this one. I am not going to name any names because I don't want to rehash old arguments. Langdon, you haven't written anything hurtful that I know of. Constructive critcism is never hurtful when you give it in a helpful way.

i like this idea too. still, its not *that* hard to leave a little comment : ). even if you only vote 10 images a day, that gives you all week to do em all ......
also, i think there's always a reason 'why' someone doesnt like something, even if you can't immediately articulate it. and i think that really trying to think about the reason you dont much care for, or do much care for, an image, can really put you in touch with your critical thinking skills. here are some sample reasons why one might not like a photo: bad focus, bad exposure, boring subject, uninteresting composition, too far, too close, bad shadows, wacked-out color, coffee spilt on the memory card, lack of outstretched arm, mirror or timer ..... ; )

This is off the subject, but I submitted my photo in the wrong challenge and would like everyone to know that. It was supposed to be in the night shots challenge. I am sorry...I am not sure what happened. Drew gave me some advice on how to unsubmitt it and I can't seem to do that...I could use some help. Sorry for the frustration my photo has caused. thanks :) |

The second e-mail clarifies -- I thought you improperly submitted to the 'Cuves' challenge. We'll remove your entry from architecture this evening.
A quick note -- posts that start with "this is off the subject" should be their own thread :) |
