having trouble with the high contrast here...i tried to lighten to bring up detail on the skier but the snow is so blasted out...is there hope?
any thoughts are most welcome!!

no problems.. I hope this is the picture you´ve lightened...
just use photoshop..
duplicate layer - add layer mask /hide all - erase until only the skier is visible then add adjustment layer/curves - play arount with the curve until the skier is bright and looks right, then flatten the image and you have a bright skier without brightening the snow :)
sounds difficult but is really simple :) |

Use a fill flash, you are shooting with strong backlight. The snow wasn't enough to fill the shadows. Or you could expose for the skiier and add the say back i photoshop. |

thanks all...
unfortunately i have photoshop elements (no curves) but i'll try the fill flash (i always forget about that guy!) and see what i can do.
i'll post the orig when i get access to my other computer.

much like DanSig's suggestion - duplicate the layer, adjust the top layer based on how you want the skier to look - use brightness/contrast and sharpen. Move the adjusted layer below the original. Start erasing the skier in the original to reveal the skier.
This one took about five minutes. Could be better with the original image:

quick mask
select inverse
delete
Levels, adjust
blur and dust and despleckle filter.
then flatten |
