I've had too many occasions where I've forgotten my little 4 digit PIN number and haven't been able to get any money out of the bank, even though I can remember pi to 50 places. Solution: go to the bank and change my PIN number to one of my own choice... which is just a section of 4 numbers out of pi :P. That number's been stuck in my head for 10 years, I don't think I'll ever forget it.

We do that too with PINs so I'm OK with those.

At least I now know I can look up my own number on the phone itself!!!!

I've sent that damn link around the world and back! :)

Kavey, did you know that these animations ended up on MTV as short clips between the vids? I reckon it's all down to your personal crusade to let the entire world know about them and that you're owed a few quid ; )

Yeah, Pete saw a couple and I caught one! We were Weebl and Bob on TV!! PIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were sooo excited!

Sadly, I can't see the site owners recognising my claim for marketing services!

LOL

If you find any mistakes, it's just proof that I didn't look it up :P.

no mistakes - that's the way i also memorized it - back in high school 32 years ago - i had to do 50 cuz some other guy knew 20

i've had occasion to rattle it off only a handful of times - most recently as my 'talent' when interviewing for that gameshow THE CHAIR (which went belly up before i got a call-back)

MORE INFO THAN YOU EVER WANTED ABOUT PI!
03/31/2003 09:26:00 AM · #35
Kon, are you sure that you didn't suggest pie as a topic and it was misread? I just knew I'd see all the pie chatters in this thread.

Indigo
Ben and I were chatting in DPC Chat and he said he should submit PI for moi but I thought he was joking! He did say PI and not PIE though!

I like this quote:

"Personal Note:
When I was a little kid, my mother told me not to stare into the sun. So once when I was 6 I did."

Anyone needing to be inspired for this challenge, go rent or buy the movie Pi. Great movie.

It's about a crazed mathematician. Good flick.

Well, for better or worse, I've submitted my Pi photo. I like it, I guess that'll be enough :).

Good luck everyone.

I haven't actually been struck by inspiration yet. I'm under a lot of stress right now and it seems to have pushed all my creativity out of my brain.

By the way, I thought the movie "Pi" was pretentious.
04/02/2003 07:51:44 PM · #43
I thought that movie was one of the worst I've ever seen. I was looking at a video in Blockbuster a few days ago; once I hit the line stating that it was from the same ones who made Pi, I put it back. I guess every movie has someone who likes it, but most ppl I know who've seen this one would agree with me. It just isn't good.
04/02/2003 08:26:39 PM · #44
Pretentious? Oh I guess the "Science-Fiction" label doesn't explain it too well. [sarcasm]Then again, it's what? No "Mercury Rising".[/sarcasm]
04/02/2003 10:59:53 PM · #45
I'm not sure what you're trying to say there indigo. I think there is a half-suggestion that the people that do like that movie have no taste based on the opinion of you and the people you know. But I'm sure you wouldn't suggest that because, as a photographer, and you know art is subjective. Strangely enough most of my friends and colleges liked that movie - perhaps we are in the group of people the director was trying to communicate with?

That said:
As a "scientist" I have to agree with Lisae - it's pretentious. It gets facts wrong and you have to have an air of disbelief while watching it. Also, it's disturbing and dark and a difficult watch though ultimately (imho) rewarding. Take from that what you will..

I'm just giving my opinion on a movie the same as you did.

Movies aside, the real question here isn't really "How do I shoot pi?" it is, "Do voters know what pi is?" If folks are looking for some clear and literal representation of pi, that is going to be difficult. If someone shows a circle and somehow indicates through light or focus or whatever that pi is a part of that circle, they may or may not succeed, depending on whether or not the voters remember their geometry!
