Just vote for the picture like it is Candid and we have to hope that it is. You can never judget about the picture if you don´t know who took it. I took a photo the last day when I was lookin´ for something to post and when I look at it now it can easely be set up but in my case it isn´t so PLEASE JUST VOTE LIKE EVERY PICTURE IS CANDID

I think you shouldn't just assume that all photos are candid just because you can't really tell if it's really not staged. Use your "gut feeling". When it looks staged to you just assume it's staged. If it's not then the photographer didn't do a good work. It could be the other way around, too. It could be that your gut feeling says it's candid but it was staged. Then the photographer was so good to be able to conceal that. But the fullfillment of the challenge topic is just a part of my score. Also take creativity and the technical merits into account.

Candid is a photograph of someone (something is some people's definition) that is not formerly posed. Take it from there.

Why do we always have to look for the dishonesty in people? Simply vote according to how well you like the photo. |

Okay, I have submitted a photo that I actually am happy to have submitted and it is getting reamed. I hope it isn't because people don't think it is candid. However, I will never know since no one is commenting! This entry is getting the worst votes of the bunch... I figure if you give something a score under 5 - you owe the photographer a reason. (At least so that the photographer can determine whether or not the score is fair). |

I think it's really hard to tell what is and isn't candid. What exactly is "posed" anyway? If you give your child a bucket and shovel and set them down in some sand. Isn't it candid if you take their picture while they're playing even though you sort of set it up? On the other hand, you could see a complete stranger out in public and not set up anything, but if they see that you're going to take a shot and they look at you & smile then I wouldn't consider it candid because they're posing. There's really only one shot in the challenge that I'm having a hard time with because it is just too perfect. I admit that sometimes you are lucky enough to be in the perfect spot at the perfect time, but those are the shots you usually miss. |

I think the hardest part of this challenge is that the members here have gotten used to expecting "artistic photography" and this challenge doesn't lend itself to that. I was surprised to actually find about 3 photos that contained a great deal of artistic elements.
The picture I took was shot into a mirror so that, while it appears the subjects are actually facing me, in reality they are not. Comparing the artistic value of mine to the 3 I referred to above, I am getting the rating I expected (4.something). |

Is it just me or are many of the submissions "snapshots" posing as "candid?" I realize there may be a fine line between the two so here's my reasoning....Many photos are too far away to be candid, therefore I would call them snapshots. For me a candid photo is described something like this....A photograph of a person (animal, being) taken from an angle that focuses on the subject and captures the moment in visual form. I'm not trying to be critical....I just want to understand as many perspectives as possible.

there are some pictures that you couldnt 'stage' - unless you had a budget like Steven Spielberg ;)
THAT's how you know it's truly candid :)

Just vote how you feel. Be honest, and try not to be too harsh. |

I see some that look posed and some that don't... i'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt if i'm not sure..

My favorite picture in this challange was obviously "set up." The camera was put in place and the photographer waited for an interesting subject to fill the space. Excellent method of capturing a candid moment in an artistic manner. While the artists method and creativity are things we could all learn from, you can bet that there will be complaints that the shot is not candid enough. The choice of good photographic background waiting to be occupied by an interesting subject is inspirational to me. The contrivance of using a pre- determined location for the shot does nothing but improve the over all quality of the photograph. And it is much more attractive than an arm pit shot........ |

Well, I don't think I like the challenge either, at least not the results so far. After getting a new camera, I wanted to submit something, but my score tells me I should have stayed out of this one. I had trouble all week with the theme of the challenge, so know I will not make it as a "Candid" photographer. Guess I better stick to my birds! I guess I could have submitted a bird shot, they are definitely candid, but I tried humans this go around!

I agree. To say it's not candid (as in posed) is basically to call the photographer a liar. In this particular challenge, there are so many deinifitions of CANDID floating around that rather than removing points for not meeting the challenge (as I normally would), I will add points to photos that meet MY PERSONAL idea of CANDID.

I agree with the theory here, but 5 is a bit high for me. I give plenty of 4s - which to me means just below average. I do try to explain all of my 3s, 2s, and 1s. Time is difficult to come by.

So Dawn, you're one of the evil low ballers! I wish you would realize that it isn't necessary to be insulting in order to be fair.A score of 4 or less suggests that the photographer should take up Dentisry as a hobby and leave the camera alone. But then maybe that is how you feel.My exmother-in-law uses a Poloriod Instamatic at family reunions. She cuts of everybody's head with the camera, gives everyone devil eyes, and then uses the prints for coasters. I never even liked the woman! But I wouldn't score her photographs less than 3. After all, they are not intentionally offensive, they aim in the general direction of the subject, and she doesn't try to con anyone into beliving they are pictures of childhood when they are really just pictures of a fly. |

That is JUST your opinion and does not reflect anyone else's reality. For me, a 5 is average, and giving a 4 means "just below average."

Dawn, I begin to understand Rapsiii3's compaint about no standards for judging. In my eyes the average shot in this GROUP gets a 7 with the peak of my curve on 8 because of the overall excellence of work submitted here. So in my eyes a low 4 is the kiss of death. like a grade of D-. And at LAST! I got the focus and light right! |

Now there are more than one realities! I am confused. Perhaps I should rethink my "opinion." Or not! |

If 1-4 are never to be used then what about 7-10 ? Maybe we shouldn't use those either.

I agree with that .. we have a scale .. let's use it. True the rules could have 'guidelines' for people (maybe they have ? sorry if yes) voting like a 'sugegsted' scale but people can always use their own. But for me, 7 or above alreasy means a picture I would have been happy to take. And 10 is the 'I'd like to frame it'

Didn't say I don't use 1-4, its just very rare for pictures here to be that bad. But then I see nothing wrong with giving out 21 tens. |

I know a lot of the "seasoned" voters/commenters/submitters have said that they don't give anything less that an 3 or 4. I use them ALL 1-10. Rate them like I rate anything else. Say it's a cake or something. If it's so beautiful that I would feel BAD eating it cause of it's beauty/quality, then a 10 it is. If it looks SO bad that I don't even want to look at it or smell it...it gets a 1. C'mon. How many times have we looked at a person and said he/she is a "real 10". Obviously if you have your vision of a "10" then surely you MUST have a vision of a "1". At least a 1 is SOMTHING. I mean, at photosig you can get up to a -3. There...it's honorable to get a 1. I think everyone deserves at least a 1 for taking the time to submit. If they took the time to submit and TRIED to meet the challenge, or whatever, then 2. If they did both those and threw in something cool 3....so on and so on until it gets as good as perfect as it can get (10). Granted, I don't give many 1,2,3's at all. Rarely, but i DO use them.
Aparently a lot of other people do too, cause MY PHOTO IS BOMBING THIS WEEK!! LOL. Oh well. My first 3 photos in a row above 41st, I guess I deserve one to totally flop. |
