No, no joke.
Just saying hello as i enter your wonderfull site.
What an idea. I have wanted to get into this for a while. But the question "where to start" has had me put it off for years.
I am slowly exploring your site, and am enjoying every corner i click around.

I live in Australia, and have not seen any location restrictions? Am i correct in the assumption that i can play?

I have no experience, other than own a digital, and know where to turn it on. I would love to learn, but it could take a while to be a patch on some of the things that ive seen here. Is that alright that i contribute what i have when i think that i do actualy have something?

What i have always liked is close ups, real close. The intricacies and complexities that is missed on a thousand passings. Is there huge cost in getting something that will start me off capturing such things? Ive only got a run of the mill camera, and that cost me enough! any tricks for the Kodak that could improve close shots.
I will have a look through the hints section in the meanwhile.

Im looking foward to this.
Thanx
Rossco

You can play, but remember to rotate your pics 180 degrees so they are right side up for us in north america please. LOL

Of course it's alright for you to contribute what you have. Just make sure it's taken within the dates of the challenges. Sometimes newbies make the mistake of entering photos they took a long time ago which fit the challenge brilliantly, then get disqualified after winning first time out.

Welcome on board and good luck.

Welcome. What a nice way to introduce yourself! I was going to tell you about Jacko and his macros...lol...but I see you've already picked him as a favorite. He's an amazing talent! There are many, many talented photographers on this site. I spend hours studying everyone's photos.
Good luck in the challenges.

Welcome, Ross,

Glad to see you've decided to join DPAddiction umm... DPChallenge!

You are absolutely right, there are some amazing photographers here. It's an incredibly competitive field, but the good news is this is also an incredibly supportive community! If you approach the challenges (and the site in general) with a thick skin and an open mind, you can expect to learn a lot here. With very few exceptions, people here and constructive and supportive, and committed to helping each other become better photographers, and to have fun in the process.

Given your location, you'll want to be aware that all challenge dates and times are listed in DPC Server Time, which corresponds to US-Eastern Standard Time (Eastern Daylight time in our summer). For easy reference you will find the current server time at very the bottom of every page on DPChallenge. Challenges begin at 00:00:00 server time the morning of the first day of the challenge, and end at 23:59:59 the last day.

I'd also recommend taking a moment to check that the date and time are set correctly (to YOUR local time zone) in your camera. You may want to get in the habit of checking this every time you shoot.

Finally, be sure to carefully read the Challenge Rules before submitting for the first time. If you have any questions about the rules, please feel free to post them to the forums or contact any member of Site Council.

Most of all have fun! That's what we're here for!

-Terry

To answer your macro question, here's a quote from a review of your camera:

The LS633 did a real nice job with the macro test. What really stands out is the smoothness of the image -- it's sharp without being grainy. The colors are quite saturated as well. In macro mode, you can get as close to your subject as 13 - 70 cm at wide-angle, and 22 - 70 cm at telephoto.

That's not extreme closeup, but it's not bad at all. You can have some fun with it.

Welcome aboard!

Robt.

Hi, thankyou for all your warm welcomes.

Addiction all right. I think im hooked.
I had a good play with a Cannon EOS 300D. NICE. But now im really hooked. Im looking into buying one, the flexibility is just nothing ive seen before and i just cant wait to get into those big lenses.

With the one that im looking at, ive got him to do a deal with extras. Double battery, battery grip, standard wide angle, 200m, 300m and extra mem card (i think big, ill have to see what i can squeeze). Plus a case. I think im going to go for a video style bag, as the camera version ones you have to place down on a flat serface to get the gear out or changed over. Would all fall out if you opened it on your shoulder! Not such a good design?

That will round to about AU$2000? (maybe a bit over) you think its jumping in a little deep? Too much too soon? But i figure starting out on the good gear must save a lot of frustration in the long run!

Ive been working on the light on white, and am happy with some of the results from the little point and shoot kodak. It takes some tricks to fool the thing, as there is very, very little manual settings or contol.
Talk about frustrating tho. I use up the battery in one shoot, trying to get it just right. new camera, new camera, new camera!

Thanx again.
Rossco
