I posted a similar post earlier today about a promotional pic, but I have a few more questions, so I made a new thread. I hope it's okay.
The group wants an outdoor b&w pic. It needs to be really sharp with a nice bokeh. I plan on buying a 550EX Flash and 5-in-1 reflector kit for the shoot. Will it be okay to use the flash on the camera, or should I buy a transmitter, so I can set it to either side? And do I point the flash straight at the group, or should I use an omnibounce and face it up? I'm sorry, but I'm very new to lighting and I want to get this figured out before I go off and buy something I might not need. Thanks for any advice :) |

If possible, find a great bright shaded area and pose them there. Then use your flash as just a fill on the camera. How big of a group? Its tough to get good bokeh out of a large group without the right lighting. I'll tell ya...an overcast day would be awesome!

There's four in the group, will that cause a problem? I agree that an overcast day would be awesome and that shouldn't be a problem around here :) |

heather, im doing the same thing as well. A friends son's band needs a photo for a press releas kit for some type of open audition at the Hard Rock here in Houston next month.
Here are some of the pics I got so far, we are going to shoot some more soon.Band pics
If you buy the flash you can always use it when ever you need. Also you dont have to buy all kinds of omnibounce or reflectors, you can usually make stuff from items you already have in your home.

You should be able to get some great shots with a group of 4 on aan overcast day. Just a fill flash and natural light. You should be able to get a pretty good shallow dof!
