I am in the market for my first digi camera, I have begun looking at the D70 and the a used 10D. Can any one tell me if there is a reason to get one over the other. I will be shooting motocross a very fast action sport. Thanks for any advice, Mike |

Options:
Nikon D70 or a used D100 maybe ($1100...)
A Canon Rebel ($800...)
A used 10D (800 and up)
A new 20D - the best choice here I think, but $1500+
I don't know much about the Pentax Ist Ds, but it is under $900. The self cleaning sensor may be a factor if you will be changing lenses much in a MX environment (DUST!)
I would think all the cameras would have about the same speed - push button take pic. My rebel will take pics as fast as i can push the shutter release. As for auto mode, I get 4 FPS for 4 frames, and then i think 2.5 fps after that. A fast CF card is important, so put a couple of 512 or 1Gb cards in your budget.
If lighting is good, fine. If supercross (indoor) or night races, then 'fast glass' (max F of 2.8 or more) will be nice if not essential.
It has been a while since i shot any sports (...will start again as soon as they do now that i have a camera that can!) but 'speed' as in FPS was never an issue for me. It was with my Fuji digicam - it was a way around shutter lag, but there is none on an slr.

I'd save up for a 20D if you can wait, as the extra fps will come in very handy for action like that.

definitely, 5fps and longer bursts makes a VERY big difference in situations like that... |

I hate to tell you, but the rebel is not good for sports.
I have tried, believe me.... it's slow. After several shots in continuous mode it will lock up. Might be better with faster card, but I don't think so. I have fast cards now, but don't use the rebel for sports anymore.

Following the theme of the D70 and 20D (rather than the 10D), here is an article comparing the two. The 20D for sports and low light seems to be the consensus. Canon 20D v. Nikon D70
As far as the 10D is concerned, I am skeptical of purchasing any used equipment unless I know the individual from whom I am purchasing. Unfounded? Yes, but that is how I feel. If my options were between a new D70 and a used 10D, I would go with the new camera.

As eager as everyone seems to spend your money, I will assume the 20D is out of your price range, or you would have listed it. Of the three cameras you have presented as options, the 10D is the better camera for sports photography. The 10D's CMOS sensor is less noisy than the D70's CCD, which will translate to clearer shots when lighting conditions force you to step up your ISO. Both cameras produce a respectable 3 frames-per-second burst rate, not quite as good as the 20D but certainly adequate for most purposes. To be honest, I find I don't use burst mode much when shooting sports, but that's just me.
Feel free to look at a few of my baseball photos. All except the first one in that folder were taken with the 10D.

It's not just the body you'll be purchasing. Consider the "system" you will be buying into. Both Nikon and Canon are very good...you just need to decide which system will suit you best. |

But what are the differences between the systems? Is one system better for sports then the other. That what I have read it seems like canon has the better lens. |

the lens systems from both brands are considered pretty equal. nikon has slightly more lenses to choose from, but both have more lenses than you could need. Both cameras are pretty similar. I had the same decision, I bought new and am very happy with what I've got. |

I agree. I use my D70 for birds quite a bit. Took this eagle shot the other day with a slow lens on burst mode and panning. Two out of three shots came out fine.
The name of the game will be glass. Either Nikon or Cannon has the lens you will need. The question is after buying the camera body will you have the cash for the lenses? |
