Hi everyone. I got what was only my 2nd 4 score in over 2 years in the breaking new ground challenge. I really liked the photo but knew it wouldnt do well. I did think it would be slightly higher, like 5.5 or something, but thats a different story :)
I think it's one of my favourite photos I've taken recently and here are a couple of outtakes to go with it, which I also really like. Any comments would be appreciated :)

Hi Ben,
I think without prior knowledge of the technique surrounding your pic the voters would vote this down a little, take solace from the fact that you enjoyed doing it and the result is as you wished, apart from the challenge score :)
I can see this or one of the other prints hangin on a wall somewhere lookin great.
I didn't enter or vote in this challenge, couldn't think of anything.
I had a similar experience with my entry in the b/w 2 challenge ( old hall) the voters didn't like it but I did.
Keep your pecker up and keep shootin,
Paul.
typo edit.

welcome to 'club sub' ben--hope your stay is a short one ;-)
yes, i do believe you were a bit under-appreciated here. the only ideas i can offer are that:
1) it came across more as abstract art than photography, in that there wasn't anything recognizable and tangible.
2) instead of a solid subject, it had a number of competing elements
hope this helps, but don't take it as gospel--i loved the image and scored it a 6. don't let the overall score deter you from this type of experimentation! |

Hey dude I gave you an eight, and surprised it didn't hit top 20 at least.
As for the 4's well I can give no comment that will make that feel better, I hate 4's like I hate fish.. YUK!
I also hate it when they are sat on top of your challenge history, in full view of everyone that looks :D Just get a few 6's and it will work it's way down the list :D
Hey I had a 4.8 straight after a 7.9 - now that hurt :(

I gave it a 6 because I was not sure of the technique used, which i think was a failing in the challenge we were supposed to vote and interpret the image knowing nothing on how it was created?
But I did like the shadow play and would have liked to seen more depressions like the yellow/gold one, infact I think that one was a better color also. |

Thanks for the comments :) I guess if I had a more descriptive title more people would have 'got it' but then I was intending it to just look like abstract art, not a photograph, so as far as that goes I guess I succeeded it :) As with everything, taste is subjective, but I guess abstract is more of a minority :P

My shot for the Breaking New Ground challenge was also an abstract. I didn't get a chance to vote on this challenge, but mine ended up in the low 6's...Go figure. I think I like yours better than mine...especially the outtakes.
Here's mine:

I gave u a 9.
Seems i like the lower ranking ones more than i did the higher ranking ones - some 3's and 4's up in the top.

Out of the three I like the green one the most, but all of them deserve more than a 5. I didn't vote in the challenge, but a 7-8 sounds about right -- 8 for the green one, definitely. It's cleaner and simpler than the other two, and the composition is more dynamic.
They'd make a nice triptych

I agree.
I think they are all very cool looking, and stand on their own, but would definitively make a nice triptych.
Very imaginative.
