I received a tsunami photo via email. It's an unbelievable shot, but I'm not 100% sure it's not doctored. How can you tell for certain whether effects have been applied?

I think it would depend on the photo and making sure teh colors and resolutions match up

//www.snopes.com has a whole huge database of spoof emails and other urban legends. If you don't find it on there its more likely to be real, but still don't believe it 100%. You could post it here and let DPCers analyse it :)

The way they tell here is by examining the original file with the EXIF information - it is unlikely that you would have that, however. I do not have the skill, but I know that many on this site do - to look at a picture and recognize various tell-tale features. I'd suggest posting it and waiting to see what others think.

I'm not sure how to tell if it's not doctored, but if it's the same shot that's been in my inbox quite a few times, it's most definately fake. The one I got was a large wave that was bigger than the skyscrappers... This is so fake! The wave was 30 feet. That would be a 3 story building... not a skyscrapper!

Anyway, don't know if that helps or not!

Well I just gotten the oportunity to browse thru www.worth1000.com , on that site you will find they have a photoshop contest (as well as a photo contest), and while browsing thru their contests I found a lot of pictures that have been running around as if they were the real thing. I dont know if their respective makers know about it, but some of the guys that participate in that site are extremelly good, I would not doubth that someone found the site and started spreading the rumors.

OK, I'm a bit of a clod at this, but I'll try uploading it here to see if anyone can tell. I'm thinking it's a hoax, but we'll see! Be right back!

Is there any way to upload it other than to put it on my portfolio? It came to me in an email.

Put it in your workshop, and it won't show up on your profile page but you can still link it to the forums.

Ok...I'm truly a clod. I now have it in my workshop. How do I know the photo # so I can link it into the thread?

The # of the thumb is the last #'s on the address.

Thanks to everyone who got their Crayons out and drew me a picture so I could upload this! Hee hee!

It will probably be a big fake, anyway....and after ALL THAT EFFORT!

It is fake, Tsunamis' waves dont travel that way.

This is the EXACT picture that I got that is a total fake... The wave was only 30 feet. This shows it to be a couple hundred feet!

I think the fact that most of the cars are staying in their respective lanes is a vote in the 'fake' category

Here's some info on this totally fake photo:

Thanks all...It looked a little too contrived, so I assumed it wasn't real, but I knew my good friends at DPC could confirm that for me!

Yes, this image is altered. Open it in PS, enlarge it to 300% , ajust brightness -22 and contrast +35 and the crop in lines will show up clearly above the wave in the upper right hand corner of the image.

hmmm... I'll have to try this when I get home (no PS at work).

big fat fake!! the wave in this image is HUGE. Look at the crest and line it up with the building nearest the shore line. For that to be real the wave would be well over 50' tall, no where close to the size of the real wave set.

And take a look at the man standing next to his truck and the lower part of the image, he's just standing there in the middle of the street. I'd be running my a#$ off....

Well gee, if it's on the internet it must be real - right?

ROFL - pretty obvious fake on that one.
