Okay, it's time to move beyond my kit lens. Which would you choose?
I've heard that the 50mm 1.8 II is a no-brainer for the price (ca. $120 CAD) but I've heard another photographer say he would definitely buy the Sigma 24-70 instead (on sale for $150 CAD).
What do you recommend? A better walk around with nice range or a nice, fast prime?
Anything else in the $150 - $200 range you would recommend instead?

| unless u need need need the zoom, 1.8 is the way to go. |

The f1.8 is a steal at the price, its very fast at focusing, and you get pictures like this
... well I am biased, its my Grandson!

I have de Canon 50mm, and is a really good lens (IMHO), it will help you a lot in very low light situations, and I enjoy play around with the depth of field. That is the first lens I bought for mine and no regreats. Besides if you have the kit lens you already have the a lot of that area covered.
In the $150-$200 I bought the Tamron 70-300 LD Macro, I like it, a little bit heavy and a little slow (4.0-5.6) but I have gotten really good results, and the macro function is really cool on that one. I got that one for 150 USD.

| The 50 1.8 is incredible for the price. It's a great lens, and that's not just "in my opinion". No one can deny the value of this lens. |

Since you have the kit lens I would vote for the 50mm f1.8 as well. I have this lens and really like the results I get with it, especially in low light situations.
A couple examples with the lens.

| I have EF lenses that cost in the thousands and I also own the 50 f/1.8. I will tell you it is a good sharp lens, price or no. The Sigma 24-70 isn't even on my wish list. |

The canon 50mm f1.8 is my cheapest and sharpest lens.
This is at 1.8 hand held in a very dim room. Very shallow dof but not unuseable.

shallow is good here if you ask me, and generally i like shallow DOF over deep. but that's just me. f:1.8 is good for making shallow DOF ;}
i own it, and haven't a complaint.

Another plug for the 50... You need one, and at the price it's a crime not to own one.
My addtions for the shots from this lens..

Mike,
Besides the kit lens, the 50mm 1.8mm is the only other one I own. I love it. Actually, it hasn't been off the camera since I got it before Christmas. It's a bit loud but it focuses very fast and is very sharp. Also by not having the zoom to depend on I'm forcing myself to work on my composition skills - a side benefit.

| It seems kind of superfluous to say that the 50mm 1.8 is a must buy lens but I will say it anyway. It is a great lens if you want to do any available light photography indoors. |

I received the 50mm 1.8 lens for Christmas, I too have not removed it from my camera since then. I love it for portrait work and general around the house stock shots.
But, I brought it on a recent snowshoe trip in Yosemite and was disapointed with the photos, seems a zoom when you are out and about is a good thing.
Now I need a good zoom to replace my kit lens that is affordable, I wonder if it's even worth replacing without spending too much money. |
