I can't argue with the results of my submission. I was wondering..... if the subject matter was different as in the "Twisted" picture, if that would have made a difference.
The fact is the pictures lack punch. They were taken on a gray day in the woods, not a whole lot of light, any advice from anyone?

ok, first, ed, here's your images:

to get them in, click the last btn above where you are typing and key in the image id in the box that pops up.

now, as far as i'm concerned, gray days in the woods are most excellent for shooting. the browns and grayish blues really compliment each other. you can also use photoshop to work with the saturizations to really make an image pop.

the key, though, is to have an interesting composition. as i commented in the challenge, your entry had too much subject and not enough background. i think if you went back, under similar conditions, and tried different compositions, you could come up with a nice image. the biggest mistake is to shoot everything dead-on at eye level. don't be afraid to turn the camera sideways or to throw yourself on the ground. go for it!

Ok. That straightened out, I like your "Twisted" better. (no pun intended)

I think that tree trunks are one of the hardest things to do well. We see them differently than the camera.

I like that "Twisted" has background on both sides. In the other, I sense that the trees are slim and...well I don't know what bothers me about it--I guess the composition just doesn't go anywhere. In both the "bokeh" (as I understand it) is limited. I doubt you can fault the lighting as 104 people (and then some) were willing to give you a 5--really bad lighting would have brought you down much more.

Thanks for the help on inserting pictures. You guys are right about the generic composition. Ok, we'll see what happens next time.
