This will be fun and educational, and hopefully cause us to stretch a bit. A perfect challenge topic. |

This is a really intereseting challenge, I just wish it was with advanced editing rules... There is only so much that can be done with a non-dslr in terms of innovative techniques, but should be fun nevertheless. |

On the contrary, this way it'll be a contest of photographic skill rather than Post Processing expertise. |

But dont forget that a very important part of photography is developing your photo in the darkroom, and in the case of digital photography this is on the computer. |

Nico,
If they'd made this one advanced editing, it would have been pretty much an exhibition of photoshop creativity. They apparently wanted an exhibition of CAMERA creativity, a seeking-out of unusual effects you can generate IN the camera.
There's still a lot of post-processing you can do with photoshop that's pretty much the equivalent of darkroom work. The main thing is, they're keeping the filters off-limits. Seems like most people these days, when they want to do somethign "different", mess with filters in photoshop.
It's gonna be fascinating to see what people come up with.
Robt.

The basic editing rule helps level the playing field and with this chalenge make people realy think. I mean otherwise every other picture would something somebody tweeked in Artistic Filters for five minutes.

I beg to differ here. Notice they put it in the basic editing rules...

You forget, the non-DSLRs are the ones with all the built-in effects. Some of them can do multiple exposures in camera and all sorts of image effects. Seems to me the non-DSLR cameras might have a little bit of an advantage. |

True, we might have to resort to using some of those cokin filters hangin around in the bottom of the camera bag. Now where's my 'speed filter' ...

Let's be honest - how many 'innovative' techniques do you think there really are left after all the time that cameras have been around and used? |

To put it in a word... none. But I think the spirit of the challenge means to try those little used techniques or combine several techniques to arrive at a very unique image. |

i read it not so much as innovative camera tricks (although those certainly are possible) but innovative ways of dealing with the subject - perspective, lighting, motion... should be interesting to see what people think of in terms of innovation... and even more so how poorly people get scored for not being "innovative" enough... |

Lenses help, so those without these little helpers, will have to think differently. Its a chance to experiment and think out of the box.
If you look at some of the winners in previous challenges, thay have been very creative with their approach and set up. The camera's used have sometimes been a fancy DSLR something or other, and sometimes point and shoots have won.
So its open season for me.... |

the world of photography is like, what 150+ years old. is there really much room to be truly innovative anymore? surely, it's ALL been done at some point, right? true, i have no imagination, so i think i'll skip this one. unless, is it being innovative to do something completely non-innovative in an innovative challenge?? deep irony, eh? |

mmm I feel it's going to be nigh on impossible to be innovative. Especially as we can't see the comments until after the challenge.
Mmmmm, I for-see lots of 'This has been done before - 1' comments :D
As for Pitsamans images, these are not innovative to me, am I wrong?

Yeah, this looks next to impossible. If anyone has any time or inclination, can they have a quick peek at my portfolio and see if any of my photos have a unique style I can draw on for this challenge? I think it's really difficult to be really objective about your own material, and everything is derivative of something else! |
