I was not very happy with the color in this photo.
I took a number of photo's and this was the one I thought looked the best for color.
It was taken inside with sunlight coming in from the right of the photo.
I also used the camera flash.
The colors do seem flat to me. How coud I have made the colors pop out better?

Increasing the contrast via a curves adjustment may help. Using hue/saturation to adjust each colour individually is another possibility.

| Well first off I would have rated this higher then it got, hey wait I did vote and gave it a 6. The colors look fine to me, you canĂ¢€™t really saturate them much more with out it looking really odd. It might have been better to use just the sunlight coming in from the side, using a flash really does make photos look flat. |

I think your flash has overpowered the effect of the sunlight - are you able to turn the flash power down on your camera (I'm presuming you were using the on-board flash) - that would help considerably. Also I would suggest under-exposing (by the standards of the camera's metering) by a stop or so: this has two benefits - colours are always richer and more punchy when slightly underexposed, and you will keep more of the highlight areas, like on that white thing at the bottom of frame. The overall levels of the image can be brought back up in processing, and the point is you have control over that.
The suggestion to turn the flash off is pretty wise also - if you need extra fill light, try using a piece of A3 or so sized white card to bounce light back into the scene (or a proper photographic reflector if your budget allows).
I do think you're absolutely spot-on in your assessment of what hurt this image in the voting though (but then that's what I said in comments). I also wonder whether you've slightly over-done it on the number of toys in the shot - it adds too much chaos to it. I think you might have been able to keep it simpler, and still hide the face in frame, which would make it a more rapidly appreciated image. Never underestimate the amount of time most voters spend looking at your shot ;-)

Part of the problem with color may be that there are too many. They compete with each other for the viewers attention.
Part of basic color theory is that if you have a image that is 50% one color and an equal amount in the complementary color they tend to neutralize each other in the mind of the viewer.
Whereas a image that has a dominate color will tend to stand out and be remembered easier.
