I've recently tried the instuctions on this site, to use my old Palm IIIc as a remote shutter release for my D70.

Just to say that I'm more than pleased with the results, I tried it recently and whilst standing about 3 feet away from the camera at a 90° angle it fired every time.

I simply installed the OmniRemote software (freeware version 1.171) and then installed the database provided on the site.

That's great, do you know if they have software that will work with Pocket PC's running pocket windows software that will do the same thing?

The remote is cheaper than those programs, works farther and is not much bigger than your thumb. Now if you can find one.

I was amazed to find my local camera store had one last time I was in... < $20 for a nice Nikon toy pretty much made my day. Since OmniRemote is licensed software, not free, it seems kind of nutty to go that route unless you prefer a delicate oversized trigger... Just get on the waiting list at your local store and you'll get what you need.

The IPAQ has built-in remote control software (can't remember the name). If you select it for a Sanyo TV type 8 it will fire the D70 with the on/off button on screen.

The older version of OnmiRemote is freeware (as far as I can tell). One issue that I have heard about with the Nikon IR remote is that it's not too powerful and you need to be on a path directly in front of the camera. Also as a side note, if you search the web for Nikon D70 CCF files, these can be loaded into most remote control applications (whatever the platform)

How responsive is the ML-L3? If it does work happily at 90° from the camera a few feet away then I might well get one for the advantage of it's size :)

Try to find the POGO-PRC200 Keychain Remote Control (TV) it has codes that Nikonians have been using for D70's since the camera came out and it cost ~$12 US to get two.

That is my next internet quest, my birthday present to me cuz the freeware OmniRemote goes buh bye after 30 days of use and was the Biggest hassle to try and hold the palm while setting up shots, then hold the palm, set another, you get the picture..:-).

I have been looking into the possibility of using some type of fiberoptic cord ending at the sensor and set up to shoot at from the side or back. Think it would work? Just need some cord.

I've been looking around trying to see if an HP iPAQ Pocket PC or Palm Visor can be used to operate my Olympus E-10. So far no luck yet.
Anyone have insight or links to info?

I emailed HP to find out about the possibility of my Jornada pocket PC working as an IR remote with the rebbie... and they just responded. The Jornada IR doesn't reach more than a meter so they doubt it would work at all. I guess I'll just fork over the $20 for the canon remote. No biggie! :o)

Arrgghhh!!!

This is true - so sorry on my recommendation, I thought that the 'pro' version was commercial and the old standard version was freeware :(

Next move - go and buy the cheapest remote I can find, use the learn mode to record the signal from my Palm before OmniRemote expires.
