I just uploaded by Deja Vu entry. I selected a winner that I thought I could duplicate. After hours of trying, I have discovered that I cannot do justice to the photo. My lighting, in particular, leaves much to be desired. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to duplicate a winner even when you had it right in front of you! The owner of the photo is online now, but I don't want to give away my entry so will say no more. I just hope that he/she sees the post and along with all of you who have produced ribbon winning photos will not be too hard on those of us who try to learn from your example. Many famous artists began by copying the paintings in the Louvre. I see now that it is a valuable way to learn. I think it will be a long time before I whine about not getting a higher score. Winners are just not that easy to duplicate. :) |

I hear ya. I actually imitated a shot I thought "oh no plm" but when it came to doing it - I did something TOTALLY different than they did and *poof* 10x more difficult my way. I think I learned how to do things the EASY way next time! lol
That said, I'm happy with my entry.

Difficult does not begin to describe what goes into trying to duplicate these shots! My question is this, what if the ribbon winner just duplicates his own shot? We're DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMED! Doomed I tell ya!

LOL, I'm so screwed on this one |

I am with you on this one it took me 5 hours to re-create the image it was very difficult but worth the effort. I also learned a alot about lighting while working on this.
In fact I spent 8 hours today working on Deja Vue and Holiday's and feel these are some of my better efforts so far.
Good luck to all those that have entered.

Me too.
Perhaps a Diptych?
I blame mine on: the camera. mine is inferior to the one i am copying.
OK, so that may not be all of it, but that's my story. I picked a relatively easy one to copy...and I did not do well.
I should have entered my Woody shot. I think Humor may do well.

Not me. I had my heart set on trying one thing. I've dropped from an early start of 6.7 to 6.0... I think the humorous ones might take this one. As great as I think those are, I hate that in a way for those of us who tried so hard. But, laughter is good medicine :) |

I'm with all of you with respect to the difficulty I had copying someone else's creative vision. In fact, I failed miserably with three different photos! lol! And I'm not completely happy with the shot I entered, but like everyone else, I certainly learned a great deal from this experience. By the way, some totally awesome shots in this challenge!! |

You got it... I made a half-hearted attempt at this one, but couldn't put the necessary time into it, so I'm sitting out. :-(

Trust me, making fun of an image is JUST as hard as copying it. My shot was ROUGH to get right - but it's still under 6.0 now (humorous one).

I tried to do something similar to the Stratocaster in the DOF challenge. First, procrastination - I live in CST and the DPC goes by eastern time. Oh well, I wasn't too happy with the shot anyway - too dark and too grainy. I'll keep trying, but here is my outtake (let's see if I can put the link here):

Here is my outtake for deja vu - Authority
Pretty sad that that was one of my first photos with my wonderful new camera, huh? But we had a good laugh together! |

After a quick browse through the entries I have to say this is going to be really funny to vote on! I'm also honoured that some people would use one of my shots as inspiration, thank you :)
I also entered and thought the shot I did would be pretty simple to pull off... but now I have a new respect for the original photographer! It's flippin hard!!

Even harder to dulicate the score LOL. My entry is wandering in the mid to upper 4s. I was hoping for more..only comment is from the original artist, and of course I hope he gave it a 10.
Can i apologize now? Profusely? I feel like i have spilled beer on the Mona Lisa or something.

Here are a couple of my outtakes and the originals:
I gave up and did not enter, due to lack of time. But, like has been mentioned here, the effort in the originals is impressive and I appreciate more and more the work that goes into those shots.

Have you ever tried to replicate a photo that you have taken earlier? I always end up going back to the original.
Now we have to try and replicate what someone else has done; this is a thousand times more difficult.
Wow, what an experience! Hours and hours of effort and frustration but have I learned a lot about lighting, positioning, timing, framing, etc.?
I bow to all those wonderful ribbon winners, masters and mistresses of their art. That was some challenge. . . .
Just finished marking everyone else and there are some really exciting imitations as well as some really funny parodies. Good Luck, fellow competitors!

I choose one I thought would be easy, NO It took over 100 photo, I tried with different camera, different lighting, I think I got close but it not a winner. I learned alot from this experience. Thanks to all the winners. |

I was absolutely frustrated at not having enough time to put together the entry that would have been perfect...
My choice was to 'parody' the Canned Peaches with an 'eye-ball' inside one of the peaches. If I had enough time, the following is what I would have done...
Ingredients
Medium-Sized Canned Ham Can
Rubber square, like a dental dam
Hot Glue or rubber cement
One Peach half from a canned peaches container
Canned Peach 'Syrup'
Friend's Hand
New Label that says "Canned Hand"
Empty out the Canned Ham and cut a hand-sized hole in the 'back' of the can. Cover the hole with the 'Dental Dam' and cut out a 'hand-sized' hole in that. Insert friend's hand into contraption. Cover said friend's hand with 'peach syrup' from canned peaches, insert single canned peach into friend's hand. Setup 'canned hand' alongside canned Hand label and snap away...
It would have been a contender...

I set out to do as exact a copy of a blue ribbon photo as possible even if it might be marked down as having no extra ingredient, I really wanted to see if I could match the shot and improve my technique in so doing, I learnt a lot about my camera and technique but mainly I learnt I still had a long way to go so resorted to Parody..
Definately a humbling experience but I got some improved shot's of other subjects based on the knowledge gained.

I wasn't going to enter because I felt like I'd create an absolute travesty of the original work. I probably did, but nevertheless it was an excellent learning experience. So I apologize to my favorite photographer for creating a mess out of your work. |

I went for a loose copy on one of my fav shots on the site. Purely as it let me gain some knowledge on studio shots as i feel its my achilles heel. I think the results turned out pretty well and like most i learned a lot from the experience.
Good theme and hope it comes round again.
Some great shots in there and i must say its brave to try and replicate work to a degree that others will judge you on. well done to all |
