I think both are good but which is better?

Hi, Both pictures look good but I however believe the colored version is the best. The reason behind my opinion is the windmill is well taken care of giving it a present day feel and the color of the blades is great against the blue sky. I think the best question is if this is the best point of view. I am drawn to the blades because of there lines, colors, and shadows therefore I canĂ¢€™t help but wonder what the photograph would of looked like if it would have been taken more to the front left than the left side. This is just my opinion, I hope it helps.

Well if the owners let me on their property I will let you know, till then this is the only angle I was able to get. I may have to go back and knock on their door some day.

The colors are way too vibrant and the image is way too sharp, clear, and crisp to make this image b&w (you just lose too much). The horizon and the lower part of that windmill seem a bit dis-colored, but I really like the color shot soooo much better.

What are you trying to say with the image?

The black and white conversion has basically made it grey. The tonal range isnt very strong and so the lack of contrast does not give it any drama or real mood. There is little texture in the image and the shadows are more an unwelcome side effect of harsh lighting instead of something to enhance the image.

The color image has contrasts between the various complimentary colors - green, red, yellow, and blue. I see the colors being part of the image rather than as a distraction to eliminate by converting to black and white. The shadows are not as obvious when the eyes are too busy drinking in the colors.

You may want to think about cloning out the partial tree and power lines and put the sole focus on the windmill.

Hope I'm not too harsh as that is not my intent. Just wanting to put the question of 'what does converting to black and white enhance about the image?' question out there.

I'd suggest another alternative: why don't you try sepia? You have kind of an oldish subject, and sepia usually looks very good with that. I played with your photo a little, and results are pretty good. It would give the photo much more mood.
