Okay, I have had a passion for photography my entire life and just yesterday I bought this new camera. I don't know hardly anything about the lenses and camera. I am educating myself on it daily and have learned a lot but my question is: With the camera I got the 18-55mm EF-S Lens and with my lack of education and experience with lenses will this work for macro pictures? Do I need to buy a macro lense right away or will the lense that I got with the camera be okay for now.
And as a newbie, I will take any and all suggestions on things to get for the camera and any webistes out there that are educational. I am teaching myself Adobe Photoshop 7 right now and loving it. I just can't wait to get the camera so I can learn that too.
Thanks for helping me.

I sure do appreciate it!

Congratulations on your purchase! I hope you have fun with it.

I found the following on-line tutorials on the Canon website to be very helpful:

AFAIK, the 18-55 will work for macro. I have focused as close as 8 inches or so with it. You won't get 1:1 or even 1:2 macro, but I think about 1:5. If you plan on doing a lot of macro work, you might want to look into a macro specific lens, they will focus closer and have more magnification. Sigma has some inexpensive ones.

the 18-55 can focus at a minimum distance of 11.4"(28cm), but you can still use this for macro. using 55mm at 28cm can give you decent macro. I would expect the ratio to be just about 4.0 at this range ( this is my guess, I haven't found the mag. for this lens anywhere )
for other specs see this bhphoto spec of 18-55

Yes, it will do some very nice macros for a cheap lens. Put it in manual focus, zoom all the way out and roll the focus all the way out. Then move the camera closer until the subject comes into focus.

Enjoy!

I'm sure you will have much fun with your new camera. For me there is nothing like photography to ease the mind. It is very easy for me to get lost in my work. I'm sure you will find it the same. Just wondering, why you choose the 300D?
