But if I remember right, when you comment during voting, you can easily go back and change your comment - and the system does not put the "edited by author" tag on it.
So what's to prevent someone making a totally inappropriate comment, leaving it on for a few days, then changing it to something more benign?
Will the comment receiver really know who made the original "bad" comment? |
If you receive an inappropriate comment, let us know and we will check into it. We take seriously abuse of any site feature.

So, what I would like to know is, what were the results of the vote? Last time I checked, there were more votes for not changing it to anonymous. If this is the case, am I to believe that voting on this type of thing doesn't matter anymore? The louder and more you complain, the better your results? Or did the numbers change on the vote?

The results were pretty close, so we thought we should just give people the choice, then everyone is happy.

This is good because it eliminates complaints. Personally, I will adhere to the old way. I do not mind receiving pm's because there are times when this is essential and I want the person with the image ro defend either concept or image. In one challenge, I was not aware of a dual function of a particular item. This difference was crucial and when the member contacted me, I stood corrected.
However, I also understand the souls that want no part or feedback on the feedback. To each his own. It is simply another choice to address what some consider a contestious problem. |

Thanks to the admins and SC for being responsive to the concerns of many in the community even though they were not the majority. This improvement should go a long way toward cutting down on the inappropriate back and forth that tends to discourage commenters.

I like the new system. I feel it should work really well. I do however have one question. In the descrition of the new feature it stated "The first option, Hide My Name, works for members only. If you select this option, comments you make on challenge entries during voting will be hidden until voting has ended. Once voting has ended, your name will be visible alongside your comment." I was just wondering if the " comments you make on challenge entries during voting will be hidden" or just the identity of the person making the comment?

It's only the username of the commentor that's hidden, not the comment itself.

I think it is a very rational decision(... because the votes were close...) to give the choice. (wonder what would have happened if we took that logic through to politics....?) What am I saying, I really think it's great. see no need for me though, if i have something to say I will not hide behind anonymity.

Didn't you guys also manage to sneak in the code to see the portfolio shots that others have chosen as favorites? I saw an earlier complaint about it not getting the attention it derserved and got confused, cuz it appeared on my profile page like magick a few nights ago. ;)

Yeah, loads of thanks for all the coding changes that have been happening recently. I LOVE the new feature that allows me to see which photos have been selected as favourites.
Please, Please PLEASE though can somebody put BACK the feature (or bug, or whatever) that used to allow me to look at ALL the non-challenge photos taken by a particular camera. I REALLY miss this feature which was taken away from us a year or so ago. |

I have been hanging around here for about a month now.... i have the time and really enjoy commenting on as many entries as i can....i always try and do it in a nice way...at least it think i have.....i cant believe how many people have pm me now after a challenge riping me for my comments...maybe comments should always be anonymus...
i cant be the only one who feels like commenting...which helps me learn...has become more of a hassel than a benefit...
maybe i havent yet fully grown that thicker skin i keep hearing about... |

Buzzmom...I have been one of your comment recievers and i have to say that u are in no way even slightly mean about any comments. its not u that needs a thicker skin! I am here to learn how to make my photography better so i crave the comments...good or bad. If someone is harsh in thier commenting i just take it with a grain of salt and really dont pay much attention to it unless it also has a suggestion on possiably fixing my screw up. but like i said i am here to learn and if i can help others learn too. i try to comment on at least 20% and let the person i comment to know that its only my personal opinion on what i dislike/like about that photo and a way i think it couldve been fixed. I got my first anonymous commenter for the triangle challenge and i must say im dying to know who it is...i can understand why people would want to remain that way untill voting is over. as long as i get some type of feedback about my photo i really dont care paper bag or not.

I can see how this can cause people to want to quite commenting. I've had many constructive comments that I have disagreed with, so I took them with a grain of salt. I've also had "smart ass" comments that made me want to PM the person back and give them a piece of my mind, but that's what those kind of people are looking for anyway, so I will not give them the gradification. If you're giving good honest comments and getting nasty PM's, maybe the site councel should look at allowing people to keep their comments hidden always, not just until the end of the challenge. This way, good honest people who are trying to help don't get slammed and trolls can't be answered!! (Unless they leave their names). |

Hey Buzzmom, I just reviewed quite a number of your comments. I don't see anything mean in any of them. I really wouldn't worry too much about some of the responses. I know they can dampen your enthusiasm and get feelings hurt, but I've learned that some people really don't want to hear anything bad about their creation. So, hopefully you'll be able to just look past their ego responses and not let it affect you.
And please, do continue to comment. I LIVE FOR THE COMMENTS, since generally the scores on my enteries don't reflect what I think they really should be :)
Good luck to you. |

Buzzom
Don't worry about it. To some folks, making any negative comments is almost akin to saying their kids are ugly. Critique is a nice way of saying criticism, and the sad fact is that some people just cannot digest any form of criticism. Just make your comments and whatever you do... don't let a few comments detract you.
You have made (*^%$*&^)(just kidding)comments on my photos and I have always found them to be right on the money. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for making the extra effort to be constructive and helpful, even in the face of a small minority who don't appreciate it.

Count me in, Slippy.
Seriously though - I think it ought to be against the terms of service to PM an angry response to comments received - even if the comments were "smart-ass" comments (like mine often are). If the comments cross the line, report them to the site council - BUT FIRST read them again and give the commenter the benefit of the doubt that they were either trying to be helpful or witty, whether they succeded or not.
my input for the day.
