I was taking a picture of a black cat on a light background (sun bleached rocks and sand) and to get any detail in the cats fur the background ended up washed out.
I was about 30 to 50 feet from the subject with a 200mm telephoto so I didn't have alot of choices with composition and didn't have alot of latitude in terms of location without spooking the cat.
Any tips on how to handle the exposure to get the detail in the black fur without washing out the background? |

Hi Duane,
This may be a case of bracketing your exposures one f-stop up & one f-stop down, then put the under-exposed and over-exposed shots over the top of each other in PS in adjustment layers.
?
From what I have read in these forums, this is the trick with difficult shots like this.

Thanks for the tip. I think I saw that in one of the tutorials. I'll set up some test shots to see if I can get that to work. If the subject is moving I may have to selectively paint in the background from one layer onto the other if the subject doesn't match up exactly.
In my problem pic certain light colored rocks were blown out. Maybe in that case I can just overlay those to balance out the picture.
This technique is probably not acceptible for the basic editing challenges. Do you know if its OK for advanced editing challenges?
