Just an FYI: I dropped from 7.15 to 6.5 with no change in the number of votea.
So someone just changed it from a 10 to a 2 or a 9 to a 1.
It is what it is, and i was higher than expected anyway. But I thought I'd just put it out there in case anyone was freaking out about a change in their scores.
I've been here long enough for it to be disappointing, but not that big of a deal. but i do remember the times where I'd be crushed. Back then we had score threads so we'd know when it was happening to others. So this is your pubic service announcement. :) |

The same thing happened to me a couple of hours ago. I dropped from a respectable 6.0769 to a disappointing 5.4615. Also no extra vote. |

Sometime this morning... 5.5 to 4.9... just like that! Ha! |

It almost always happens to me but honestly I do not believe in the way the voters mark. In the last two months I started with several 8s only to go down progressively. |

Same here, first time I looked it was 7.3, now it's around 5.7, and shortly before that 6.4 (Best of 2023). |

Thanks for bringing this up. I know my entry is mediocre but it went from 5.4xxx to 4.7xxx and I did find that a bit of a downer. |

From (innumerable) past discussion threads I know some voters use a roughly binary system to first sort the entries into two or three groups (e.g. give all photos either a 1 or 9 first), and then go back through the groups and assign a more specific vote, which can lead to larger score swings.
Also, if it's happening to so many of you (us?) it means it might affect the absolute score but not the more-important rankings ... |

Seen that too.. I half heartedly wish any vote of 1,2,3 would require a comment.. At least some context would be nice

Mine dropped from a 7+ to a low 6.(Can't really complain about being in that range!) But that's a pretty typical drop after the first day or two of voting. |

Some voters really play here rough with their marks and probably have great fun about our rant! |

As perplexing as this. I was kind of relieved to read this, I dropped nearly a full point with few votes. I can̢۪t say it̢۪s very encouraging to hang around here with so few voters. |

I nearly started a "can we please get more of the first 8 voters"? when it happened to me today. Yes, I see this as a pattern and never believe a high score the first few votes, but I was really starting to think I had a decent entry when wham. We are talking in general, I think, in terms of the start high and then drop pattern . . . but specifically about the "Best of" challenge, right? |

This begs a question i've been wondering. What are the scores actually worth?
What is the breakdown of each vote vs participants vs non-participants.. Or is that secret sauce not being shared..
and while I post this, I went from a 6.3 to a 7.4 and back down to a 6.25.. Sheesh |

Well I'm not surprised by my score, and it reminds me why I left here a couple years back. Same pettiness in voting, same few sacred cows ribboning.
Doubt that I will enter many more challenges. Why even bother being here?!

Well I don’t know about all you guys out there, but I’ll be looking for photos that don’t have very low votes on themâ€Â¦ unless by then the culprit changes their votes!
I still have a very long way to go to reach the score I had before the devourer ripped through, or maybe devourers.

Not sure I agree. I think I've been pulling ribbons a bit more in the last year, but I still do my share of "meh" entries, so I'm nowhere near being a sacred cow. I think I've just seen gradual improvement in the 17 years I've been playing here.
I often feel I've been too harsh in voting. So I'll review my average given for a challenge. If I gave out between 6 to 6.5, I feel I've been fair. If I see I've given out less than a 6 on average, I review my votes to decide if I was being harsh, or if the topic just didn't produce much that grabbed my attention.

No secret sauce. :-) Participants vs Non-Participants is simply the average given by each group. All votes count the same, regardless of the voters status.
-- my opinion only -- many discussions over the years on these stats --
You can decipher however you want really. Participants are vested in the challenge theme since they have also entered the challenge. That may make that group a bit more critical / appreciative of meeting the challenge, and the effort needed to capture an image for the challenge. I always consider the Non-Participants as a group that are lookng at the gallery of art from the outside in. |

I just got another 1 vote, pfttt! Back below 6 - crazy, as I thought my shot was pretty spiffy.
Just wondering in anyone on the SC is experiencing the same wild votes.
I'm also guessing the vote scrubber will come into operation and our scores will be nowhere near what it looks like just before rollover.

the voting is particularly harsh in the ex fs ..
my score dropped a heap a few hours ago .. then recently I'm pretty sure I got a vote of 1 ..
there are all sorts of ways to have challenges in photography sites ..
some have judges who are going to have their own likes and dislikes ..
and other places where ppl from outside vote ..
now in dpc with so few ppl left everyone's vote makes a difference.. especially the high and low votes..
not like in the past when there were heaps more ppl voting ... where a very low vote wasn't going to have a huge impact on your overall score like it does now ..
for some ppl there would be a conflict of interest to vote in a challenge you are entered in ..
for some they would vote the same no matter if they were in the challenge or not ..
but with so few left .. the voting system doesn't seem to be working ..
that could be why so many have left ..
just my opinion .. xx
edit to say .. OMG Anita .. just saw you got a 1 as well .. could be someone rocking the boat .. !! ..

I fully agree with you, Roz. Clearly the days of checking scores at the 50-score mark are long gone and unlikely to return.
Ditto any semblance of unbiased voting, which is why I left a few years back. And bow that I have returned it's clear that things have not changed and never will.
Despite what people think of my work, I definitely have images which have sold repeatedly no matter what the score.
In fact this pic has just sold for the fourth time on Alamy.
