I appreciate that and agree - I have gotten my share of 'don't like the subject 3 and 4 votes'. It is what it is. But I agree a 1 is in it's own league. I know I have never given out a 1 and I have strongly disliked the subject, execution, everything about an image. The lowest I will go is a 3 especially when there are so few voters and it really affects the overall score. Since returning to DPC I have restricted my voting scale - rarely give out a 10 and rarely give out a 3. Oh well.
I will say this to the voter: Please consider leaving feedback; we can all improve and I may not agree with your critique but I darn sure would respect the heck out of you backing up your 1. |
I always wonder why some participants are so upset about the 1-votes. Why would you care?
To me, it's simply a scale - 10 is better than 9, 9 is better than 8, 2 is better than 1. And the other way round - 1 is worse than a 2, and so on.
So in DPC one can assign 10 levels. And the average is your final score.
You can of course limit yourself to 7 levels, but why? My personal reason for restricting myself to 7 levels is that there are not very many images these days and/or votes. So, although I may not love an image, my 3 is as impactful as a 1 in the older (more heavily participated) DPC and I don̢۪t want my own personal opinion to so greatly affect the outcome in the average. My 9 or 10 has also been far and few between so in actuality my personal scale due to participation levels is about 6, pre DPL it was 5 (range of 4-8) both with a very rare 9 or 10 variance. Doesn't make a difference, really. Some shots get your lowest vote, be that a 3 or a 1, and some get your highest, be that a 9 or a 10.
I'd suggest to not take all this too serious or too personal. I actually take photography very seriously; I want to grow and learn, which is why I returned to DPC and to me a 1 vote is an opportunity to learn. So a simple coding change to encourage feedback (or highlight accidentally hitting a low score when you intended a 10) seems like an easy fix, not forced but a reminder. For me, I am trying to get better at landscapes so that is why this particular 1 resonated with me and would have loved the ‘why’ behind it. If it was one of my portraits or closeups (not still life-another opportunity for personal growth) I would dismiss it as ‘not their taste’ and move on. But if I were trying to learn to do a better portrait, I think feedback would be helpful. So, again, a quick pop up ‘consider leaving feedback’ might prove helpful. |

You offered it up for people to tell you what they think then you want to bust their chops because you fell short in their opinion? |

Fine, then deal with that kind of ignorant, divisive action. Yes, there are extremely isolated cases where a 1 can be supported, but more often that's not the case. |

Yah, well..... Upon watching/listening to this subject come around the way that it does, and this particular instance being somewhat common, both a lone or very few 1/2 votes on an otherwise good image, I feel differently now.
Personally, I don't much care as I am perfectly capable of dismissing an obviously pointed vote as what it is, but it does upset people greatly.
Part of what this has evolved into is discussing decorum. Regardless of personal distaste for subject matter, submitted images have more than one criteria for voting.
If we are supposed to have any level of consideration for our fellow photogs and to act accordingly, then voting a 1 on an otherwise outstandingly received image is well, kinda wrong, and wait for it..... NOT IN THE SPIRIT OF DP CHALLENGE.

So.....
What about the idea that if an image earns a certain average that errant trash votes get scrubbed?
Looked at the Landscape/Portrait challenge and there was one 1 and one 2 in the Top 10.
There is certainly nothing about either of those images to justify those votes.
Even taking personal taste into consideration, the images themselves have merit as photographs, well composed and edited.
IIRC, we're not supposed to downvote if an image DNMC so why wouldn't a decent image, though of a subject that is personally unappealing, at least warrant consideration for its rendering as a finished image?

Actually. In the Voting Rules (there's a whole page for what to do / not to do for anyone interested) ...
You should:
- keep an open mind to other interpretations of the challenge topic.
- consider the challenge topic when voting, and adjust your score accordingly.
Kind of offsetting IMO. One says, wait, think about it, before dinging an entry. The other says, well, if it really doesn't fit, do what you feel is necessary.
JMO of course. :-)
Those are only two bullet points of many, and of course, there's a whole section on what "You may not" do as well. |
