The best thing about this site is that the topics encourage you to expand your abilities. I have done very little work on B&W up to this point. So, I started playing with some old images to work on my workflow/technique.
These were done under basic editing rules. C&C appreciated.

They both beautiful but the second I like more, that one is really great!

Both are good, but the first one has a bit two much contrast for me. The second one is much better.

I have to agree. It is difficult to rip your eyes away from that black wall, and see what else is going on. I am curious what this one looked like in color.
The second shot is pretty good, though.

They are both great shots, however I think the sky on the 2nd shot is a bit too much for me. I'm also not too sure about the border on the second one, but for me I think it only went well with the Barn photo.

yes in the first one not only that wall is too black but it also has too many elements in it, gives it an uncertain feeling of not knowin what exactly to look at, while in the second everything is clear and simple a curved line that guides your eye smoothly in the composition. Really beautiful that one.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Here are the unedited color versions-

now that you showed the color versions I think the first one is much better in color and the second is much better in b/w.

I think if you reduced the contrast in the second one it might be even better, the clouds look like they are burned out (which judging from the original they are not).

Seeing the color versions, I can see why the wall of the barn was so dark. Unfortunately, in the black and white copy, the detail of the planking is gone. (It's very subtle). Looks like a hard shot to get without either having the wall blanked out, or everything else burned out.
Challenging to try tho'.
The river on the other hand, seemed to sharpen up a bit in black and white. Give those trees another weekend or two to do some more changing, and you may get some cool colors out of that area.
Interesting shots by the way.

That's really strange... The building looks like it's in negative to me, specially in B&W, but also to some extent in the colour version. Am I weird or did anyone else think the same?

Had a quick play with it in PhotoShop.

nope your not weird, when i saw the thumb it did look like a neg. or like it had been inverted (in PS)

i like the colour 1 of the barn better i think it is more clear as to what is going on (ie.shadows and such)

the 2nd shot of the lake IMHO does better in B&W.

WOW, that's great. What exactly did you do?

I went through again to get the same approximate steps...

Burned the clouds and the water a bit, did a small levels adjustment, used the channel mixer to increase the red channel value and decrease the blue channel. Again did a bit of a levels adjustment to taste.
