I love these "my camera is better than your camera threads" - or at least how they morph into that eventually. :-) Sounds like DPReview.com :-D
I think that there's room for all of the top players (brands) and you won't go wrong with selecting from the top tiers within each. So many choices, so much $$$! |

As for the glass, I have been using Canon glass for years also. However, when I purchased the R earlier this year I started upgrading my lenses to the RF mount as well. My other lenses were good, but the hype about the RF glass is real. Canon really did step up their game in that category for sure. [/quote]
I can definitely see adding to my lens collection by purchasing some RF lenses. Any you recommend? |

Honestly I'm not a fan boy. I had a Nikon gear and I first switched to have a system which allowed me to shoot both photos and videos since I've been working as a filmmaker since 2004. I had no major problems with Nikon, I love the RAW files, I loved the ergonomics of the cameras. I didn't love AF so much. When I first bought a Sony A6000 (just to try the Sony system) and above all A7S2 for video I started to study pros and cons. The cons where too many IMO. When they presented the A7R3 I decided to switch because it was far far better the previous Sony cameras. Is it a perfect system? Of course not. Is it "almost" perfect for what I do? Yes it is. That's all I can say about that. I always try to be as honest as possible. Maybe one day I'll have Canon, for me it's not a matter of different companies. I'll always use what's better for me and only for me. For instance I could say that Sony A73 and A7R3 have not a perfect color science in video and I always regret having sold my A7S2. I don't like they don't have double exposure feature in camera. I don't like the fact that I had to send twice the A7R3 to change the shutter button. I don't like A73 EVF (the R3 is perfect instead). That's all. I don't want to talk about Canon and sorry Lawrence for stealing the thread, I didn't want to.

Might be truer than you think... if you wait about 6 to 9 months, and watch the official Canon refurbs site very diligently, it may be possible to score a smokin' deal. Those deals are typically gone in sixty seconds (sometimes literally) so it is a bit of a lottery, LOL. |

Oh that sounds interesting! I normally buy my cameras used from Ebay so hoping someone video guy will sell one cheap in a few months time. Would make a mighty nice Christmas present for me:) |

The Canon refurbs are a particularly good deal since they come with the full "as new" warranty.
ETA: an example of a "smokin' deal" would be a 5D Mk IV body for $2249 USD. That's about $250 under the B+H new price, and still with full warranty.

Yeh, I read that too. Frankly, I'd be a little skittish about resetting that timer. It will absolutely result in higher in-camera temperatures, and Canon certainly based the timer settings on data. I would not risk bricking a camera using this technique. |

Thanks kirbic, I will keep an eye out - I assume the UK Canon online presence also offers refurbished cameras |

I personally have concerns about buying expensive equipment on EBay or from unknown sources. I would rather pay a couple of hundred dollars more for a known and trusted retailer that you can go back to if there is a problem. |

I hear what you are saying but I am prepared to take a risk to save money if I feel confident it is a genuine seller = obviously there is a gamble with this approach but having bought all my cameras from Ebay I have not had an issue yet. I may not be so lucky next time :) Perhaps in the US Ebay is riskier than the UK though there are definitely crooks operating in the UK on Ebay too. |

I'm not too afraid of ebay, if the seller has a very good reputation. It's actually riskier for a seller than it is for a buyer, IMO. In the US, there are better places to look for a used camera body, however. The best is probably the fredmiranda.com buy/sell forum, but it's a little bit cliquey, you need some "street cred" there to be taken seriously as a buyer, or especially as a seller. Don't know if an international buyer would be accepted there? |

Of the three I currently own my favorite has got to be the new 70-200, followed closely by the new 15-35. The 100-500 is on my list eventually, as well as the 85 F1.2. I just wish they weren't all so expensive! |

I usually buy from BH photo. When I first got my 5D Mark IV I had problems with the mirror locking up. They sent me a new one no problem. Then I had another hardware problem a few months later. I sent it back and they replaced it again. No problems since then. I like having a relationship with a reputable retailer. |

Thanks Scott. I'll keep those in mind. |

I need to do some reading on the 100-500. Right now I have the 100-400 II and it is so damn good, I'm really questioning whether the extra 100mm of reach would be that big a deal. I'll already have 1.5 times the number of pixels on the subject, do I really need more reach? |

Very good presentation of a comparison between the Canon 5d Mark IV and the R5.

Looks like a well-done review. I will give it a watch this evening.

ETA: watched it, and thought it was a well-considered review. He's obviously a very experienced sports photog, even though that's not what he currently does. Loved his demo of rolling shutter on the football. One of the best real-world demonstrations of that issue that I've seen.
Forty-minute review, all the video shot on the R5 in 8k and 4k HQ. He used the "card out, record to external device" hack to eliminate any overheat issue. Watched it in 4k, really beautiful video quality.

Thought I'd post back here for an update on my purchase decision... I've decided to delay purchase of the R5, not because I have any qualms about the camera itself, but because I have gone and shot my budget for the time being:
Ran across a very lightly used 2020 BMW R1250 GS Adventure only 1.5 hours away, and wound up giving it a new home! |

I'm thinking about the r6 but it's a big stretch in the budget for 10 mp less than the less expensive r but it also has ibis and 4k 60 without a crowd which is nice. So I think I'll get either the r or r6 just to stay with canon because a) I have glass (not that much but I am to young to have a steady source of income so I can't really pay for new ones even if I sold all my lenses) and b) canon is getting better with mirrorless and I can't wait until they release a r5 without overheating. |

I like the roll bars. How do you put chains on a motorcycle? |
