LOL, I know the sigh of relief I always get when I put my CF card in the card reader and see all my photos pop up on screen. So I did feel for you, I really did :) |

That's great news, Johanna. I lost some photos once when a card became only partially corrupted. I never got them back but they weren't important enough to fret over. I can only imagine how you were feeling. Glad it ended well. |

Originally posted by tanguera: OK, final update. I tried EaseUs recovery software and yes, it found the files. It recovered them with the extension .CHK, which I changed to NEF, and my computer was able to change them. Of the 125 shots, only 7 were unreadable. I'm hoping they're not the 7 best.... but at least I have the images.
Thank you all sooooooo much for your support and your wonderful suggestions. I cannot tell you the anguish I've had for the past several days. I will post the final, finished photo here as a thank you :) |
Great, so happy for you |

PS - alas, the story does NOT end well. It seems Windows Explorer can see them just fine. I can also open them in the resident photo program. They show up fine. The thumbnails are "complete". But if I open them in either, bridge, PS or LR, they're corrupted.
They're mostly corrupted and unusable. Most of them have a big blue, white, yellow or black bar across them. Some say "an unexpected end of life occurred".
That's pretty much how I feel right now.
Any other ideas...?

I don't know what the resident photo program is, but if it offers a "Save as" you could at least save the lower resolution version to the hard disk.

Probably end of file, not end of life, though it seems to be more or less the same here. I would suppose that the error and the bars indicate something went wrong with the jpeg-file. If you shot raw as well, that file might still be usable, and the raw file usually has an embedded jpeg version of the shot in it. I'm using Linux, so I'm not familiar with Windows or Mac programs, but maybe someone else here knows a program that can be used to extract the jpeg from the raw (if the raw-file is corrupted as well that might not be an option, but it maybe worth a try). |

I'm so sorry to see your anguish at the loss of so much effort and artistry. Have you tried to consult the maker of your memory card? I don't know, but maybe there are technical journals that you could appeal to. I hope there's still some way. |

The camera is at Nikon now, and they're going to see what happened.
Bjoern, only shot raw. I'm guessing what explorer is seeing are the same jobs created that we see on our camera. But for some reason the camera cannot see them.
I have tried "saving as" from the picture viewer, but it just saves a corrupt version. |

This is gut wrenching. Especially as it was a fabulous shoot, even just seeing that, on an everyday shoot would invoke puke endorsed dread!.
(((But look on the bright side of life, you get to fly down there again and re-shoot and add another few fabulous people in there as well. (Okay, still gut wrenching, just trying to cheer you up a little) ={
(((((failing miserably )))))))

It won't help with the current situation, but the only time I've had a card fail was when the camera was writing a picture when the batteries died. I now try to pay more attention to the "low battery" warning ... |

I would only try it again on "fiends" too, Mike!
LOL!
I actually never did wedding photography for anyone when I was starting out without having one of their own follow me around taking every shot that I took... "just in case". I wasn't charging... just doing a favor.
I was never sure enough about my abilities to shoot a wedding for pay.
I'm a scaredy cat.
Kudos to you! |
LOL! I really should learn to proof what I type a few times. Actually it was a fiend of a fiend kind of thing... :)
I loved doing weddings and had done about a dozen very successful ones before this one but on this one, anything that could go wrong did, 5 of my 7 film backs on my RB67 had problems, my main flash and backup flash went bad and I was stuck with a 3rd cheap one that would light up my camera bag if I had a flashlight to help. Most of it was caused by nerves after the first couple of problems but I felt about as bad over the whole thing as I've felt about anything in my life and thought it was just me not cut out for weddings. Then the internet came along and I got to find out just how common it was to have a "bad" day and I wasn't the worst photographer out there... there were actually several with worse luck than me. :D
Glad to hear almost all of the files were recovered although it doesn't sound like it's going to help much. Hopefully there are ways to still pull the files out.
Mike

Update: was able to recover medium sized jpgs of the entire shoot. The client indicated she'd want an 8x10 print at the largest, so if the jpgs are good, I might be able to get away with just those. There are also a couple of the RAW files that have enough on them I can cobble something together....
What an ordeal.
At least it wasn't a wedding... :) |

Wow, Johanna - what stress! I hope you get it salvaged - sounds like you will. Maybe you could use an external hard drive or device that you can immediately transfer copies of the files to during or right after the shoot? I know if I was doing weddings or even a destination shoot, I would be paranoid to the point of making backups of the backups before I left the site. |

What a nightmare.
Some of the following may have already been offered.
1) I had the same thing happen. Turned out to be a corrupted card. I shoot RAW+Jpeg Large Fine and was lucky enough to have enough usable jpegs that I was able to make a delivery. What I learned was two things: shoot on two cards and if you ever get any weird behaviors on a card, stop using it.
2) Get a throwaway laptop for traveling. As soon as you finish shooting, download. I have a folder on my desktop called "Worse Case Scenario" and I just drag from my card into this folder. And I carry an external hard drive that gets a copy. This is only for peace of mind and it only costs a few minutes.
3) Whenever possible, shoot tethered.
4) It is possible to get a decent 8x10 from an 800kb file. Make test prints and massage the file(s) until you have something suitable. Just remember, no one is ever likely to see the flaws and imperfections that will be so glaringly obvious to you.
Lastly, you are not alone. This stuff happens to everyone sooner or later.
Cheers,
Skip

Thanks, Skip! Yes, I normally do. It was my first such trip abroad and I brought everything but...
Mercury Retrograde is really kicking my butt, though... my computer has become mostly a giant paperweight and it looks like I may have to wipe and start from scratch. This should have zero effect on my personal files as everything is on external drives...
What a week.... |
