I am a new member and would like to know if each person can only submit one entry per contest?

Yes. One only, and it might be a good idea to read all the rules before submitting an entry so you know to NOT submit a pic with a watermark, one that is not undersized etc.

Welcome! Yup. Snaffles said it: just one entry per contest.

She also made a very valid point. Many times people haven't carefully read the rules and end up getting a disqualification early on.

Also -- make sure you have a valid original. That's one of the biggest problems. If you're shooting in jpeg, keep an edited copy (and be careful, some programs used to download end up editing the original. Best thing to do is simply drag the file on to the hard drive to make a copy.

The most common reasons perfectly good images get DQ'd:

- The time/date on the camera is incorrect and shows the image as taken outside the challenge dates
- text is added - most commonly a watermark
- a violation of the editing rule set for the challenge, and
- inability to provide an original/unaltered original for validation

This last one is tricky. Many transfer programs alter the original, so only copy directly from the memory card/camera to the computer. And do not, ever, process the original image for the challenge. Make a copy of it and process that. You can always delete it later, if it is not required for validation.

THE FAQ section doesn't outline the rules; you need to click on the specific ruleset for the challenge you plan on entering. Some examples:

Most challenges nowadays are Advanced, which allows for things like multiple captures (ie focus stacking). You can do all kinds of adjustments to your image; you can use cloning to eliminate distractions but not add new features.

In Expert editing, virtually anything goes. You can still only use images that you shot yourself in the timeframe allowed, though.

In Minimal editing, you MUST shoot jpg, and you can do very, very, VERY little in post - you can't even crop, for example. Nor can you do any kind of work on the colours, though you can rotate it 90 degrees and convert it to b/w.

Basic editing, which is all but nonexistent now, allows for global changes to be made to an image but no cloning allowed.

May sound complicated, but the best thing to do is read the rules and more importantly, UNDERSTAND the rules. An awful lot of noobs who win their first challenge out, are DQ'd, because the image is one from their archives. It doesn't matter how great a pic it is, if it was taken outside the timeframe for that challenge, and it does well enough that you are asked to provide a valid EXIF file and it turns out that great entry was shot two years ago...it's DQ'd.
