Okay... the conventional wisdom is that CRTs are much better for photographic work than LCDs.
I'm just wondering, have LCDs progressed to the point where you trust doing your photoshop work on an LCD? If so, which one would you recommend as having good color, contrast, viewability and .... going out on a limb here: affordable?

Apple Cinema Display, hands down. The current models have a standard DVI connection for PC users.

I use a Relisys LCD monitor, and I have no problems with the colout/contrast or anything at all.... I used to use a CRT, and when I switched I was impressed by what the LCD did. It's Sharp and very clear. its a 532 or something like that. My CRT, I noticed when the screen was all white, that sometimes an area of the screen was just slightly off white, but on the LCD its perfect.
Also LCD's do not flicker, unlike CRT's.....

I use the Samsung SyncMaster 181T with DVI through an ATI Radeon graphics card.
It is clearer than my old Viewsonic 19", less glare and being DVI it automatically selects the resolution. I still use a Dell 17", but can't view it as long as the Samsung.
Pricewise, the Samsung cost me £600 a year ago, don't know what current prices are for comparative model, but worth every penny.
No way would even consider going back to CRT, the included software allows colour management, gamma adjustment, white balance control. In fact, sometimes it is too good and it makes my photos look really ordinary!! Perhaps it has a fault in that aspect?? :) |

Absolutely. Even the iMac G5 excels, IMO. I just finished editing a photo on a 20 inch iMac display.

I just replaced a 24" Sun CRT(made by Sony) with a 21" Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP. I have it connect to a Radeon 128 Pro via DVI and love it. Planning on picking up the Color Vision Spyder shortly so I can ensure it stays calibrated.
Though it will be some time before LCD's surpass CRT's (if at all possible), unless your relying on it for professional work, a good quality CRT is the way to go. At least for me it was. |
