My oldest is a 64 MB Sandisk that I picked up just after Christmas '01.
It's, actually, the only one I have.. for now. :) Still going strong.

I've got one I'm about to pitch. I bought it about 6 months ago and it's totally crapped out. Takes FOREVER to get photos off it and I've lost more than I can count. I kept using it since I didn't know which disc was actually the crap one [I kept mixing them up].
It's a sandisk which must just be a lemon.
P.S. I use other cards that are up to 4-5 years old

None of my CF cards have given me any trouble. I have two 256's that are from when I bought my Canon G2, almost 3 years ago and 25,000 photos ago. Of course, my Canon G2 crapped out this August, but the memory cards are going strong in my new Rebel.
I did though buy a 1GB for the Rebel because I always hate to have to stop and change the cards, and I shoot Raw, which means 30 pics per card or so on the 256's. |

Yeah, name-brand cards like Sandisk can last for years without problems. More generic brands use iffy flash memory that tends to cause corrupted files and other difficulties. I learned the hard way. :(

If the card is only 6 months old, you should be able to get a new one from Sandisk. It's certainly not normal for a card to fail that early, even in pretty severe use.
We have an industrial computer at work that some goof designed using a CF card as the boot drive, LOL. The cards are written to so often that they crap out after about a year. You can imagine how may write cycles they go through. I'm sure you haven't written to your card even one tenth a smany time as necessary to cause failure. I think it takes at least 100,000 writes, in the same location, to cause failure with moder flash memory (at least the high-quality memory used by makers like Sandisk. |

I've read a similar stat about 100,000 writes per cell. I belive cards generally come with more cells than they need, so they can be swapped out to improve lifetime. |
