Are the results of the challenge a bit curious?
I mean this looks ok I guess
Average Score: 5.42469
Highest Score: 7.7179
Median Score: 5.37425
Lowest Score: 4.1918
But
1st place with an
average vote of 7.7179
And
4th place with an
average vote of 5.9722
So what happened? |

I'm guessing the photos were not strong enough, especially mine, surprised I got into the TT.
I was on 6.27 a few days before the challenged ended, and dropped over nearly .30 overnight.

No shenanigans here. The Blue Ribbon was just the perfect, Norman Rockwell-esque sentimental Americana sort of picture that hits all the "gee whiz" buttons amongst the electorate. Mine included. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was hands-down the winner, and I hadn't even seen but a third of the images by then :-) |

I'm not questioning the worth of the blue ribbon so much as that 6 out of the top 10 places had a score of less than 6. Surely someone besides me finds that curious. |

I am not Surprised at all, most of the other images did not really convey curiosity IMO, most needed a title reference to help the viewer make the connection. No offense to the other images but the Blue ribbon was clearly the class of the field. I gave the winning image a 10, next highest votes I gave were 7's. |

I couldn't agree more. The doggie-frog image was the absolute BEST overall in every aspect. Well earned!!
If anyone knows of "shenanigans" during voting on DPC, I ask that you let me know ASAP so that I can leave the building. I know already that there's lots of "Ego" in DPC, that scores are perhaps more important to some than they should be.
But, if it turns out that voting is anything less than fair, for any reason whatsoever, I want no part of it.

No need to get all dramatic about it. SC keeps an eye on these things, and the scores don't reflect anything other than just less-than-wow images that don't hit the topic on the head. There's really nothing to worry about. |

What was curious to me was the huge difference between participants and non-participants score on my image (which, to be honest, finished higher than I expected)
Average Vote (Participants): 6.500
Average Vote (Non-Participants): 5.636
As well as my personal favorite of this challenge
Avg (participants): 6.5789
Avg (non-participants): 5.5636
Maybe that's normal and I just haven't be curious enough to notice it before. |

More likely it is what it is, a rare aberration. You can't have a normal bell curve without outliers on each end ... |

I was quite shocked by the difference in scores, it actually brought home with a thud the difference between what this community thinks is a good photo and what my opinion of what a good photo is. No disrespect to the winning image but being honest I'd have to say that most of the other images were better than that, the 10th placed image got a 5.8 but it would be easy imagining that shot in a gallery or an exhibition. Nobody is right and I'm just ranting but heck I'm really not in sync with DPC these days. |

Does it get more curious?
Of the 78 voters (on the blue ribbon image because I had to pick one) there were 21 participants who cast a vote and 57 non-participants who offered their opinion with a score.
In other words, 53 people entered the challenge and 21 of them voted (39%) on this image.
But on the other hand, out of the 166 views, 78 of those were accompanied by a vote (47%).
And please do not take any of this to mean I'm complaining or that I'm trying to make waves. I'm not at all... just noticing what's happening and putting it out there. I don't shoot for ribbons (at least not primarily, not saying I don't want one every once in awhile)... I vote what I like and what I don't (100% most of the time)... I try to make comments (although recently I've slowed down)... that's all. |

actually a most interesting numerical outcome. Bear is right about the winning formula. Norman Rockwell didn't get to be Norman Rockwell by chance. |
