I am new to this site, signed up only a few days ago, and must confess that I started judging without reading the rules or studying the etiquette. I must apologise to anybody who received a 1 (or 2) without comment in the 'Textures' challenge. I now realise this was a very bad thing, but typical of me, I jumped in feet first. My low mark had nothing to do with the quality of the pictures. I had marked in preference against others. My top picture getting 10 and my least favourite getting 1â€Â¦ I am very sorry. I really like the concept of this site, and the more I look round and read the comments, the more impressive it becomes and the more I understand the rules. That said; I'd like to ask for guidance and feedback on my opinion of how I perceive the site. I am no pro-photographer – far from it - but like many, I think I'm quite good, therefore, I can only judge on what I see, so I use the method of scanning all pictures and vote first on those that jump out at me. But what I see, and how I judge a picture will only be on a personal level. I realise how important comments are, but I am sometimes unsure as to why I dislike a given picture. It certainly does not reflect on the person taking the picture or the picture itself. An example here would be the winning 'Textures' image, I wasn't overly impressed with the content, great picture, but I scored this picture low because I felt the challenge requirement wasn't met as well as it could have been. Where as, the 3rd placed picture, I gave 9 because I thought it was a superb picture and really captured the challenge and the 42nd placed picture is the one I thought would win – so, who am I to judge? I don't want to offend anybody, and rest assured I am not going to score low without explanation again. But, if I didn't like a picture, I'd have to say so. But how do you explain the reasoning without sounding nasty if you don't actually know why you dislike a picture – I think Point's owl is a good picture, but I don't know how to articulate why I didn't think it was good enough to win. I think I should be honest, and where as Point wont be offended or upset, because I'm clearly in the minority, had the picture scored low right across the board would I be seen as nasty if I voted low and just said, "Sorry, I didn't like it much". From what I have read so far, what one says about a picture is of vital importance and one should be able to learn from the experience. But how do I explain what's wrong to somebody when I don't really know myself? Perhaps it's because some pictures really do stand out as above average pictures and leave the others just a tad behind – but that's just my opinion. In short, I think, what I am trying to say is, that it matters what people think about your work, but there'll always be some that like a picture and some that don't. Perhaps the quote 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' is apt here. I am not a very good critic, but I know what I like, the fact I love coffee, but I do not like tea, does not make tea a bad drinkâ€Â¦ Any advice would be greatâ€Â¦
Finally, I am really sorry for any offence I may have caused by scoring low without comment, there was no bad intent, but I realise now that it was not the thing to do and I promise not to score low without comment ever againâ€Â¦

I think you, like many here, have your methodology and reasoning for your vote. That is fine :) Vote how you feel... there is no wrong or right vote here.
As for comments, if you feel inclined to comment on a photo, please feel free to do so. I don't think that there is anything wrong with what you have said here...
:)

I wouldn't angst over this. If you dont like a picture but cant put your finger on why then it's ok to just say 'I dont like it but I cant put my finger on why'. Sure as shootin' one of the other commenters is going to come up with a way the picture could have been improved.
Just have some fun and learn from all these excellent photographers.
