Hello everyone....just curious as to how many of you use the 'portfolio' portions of your profiles, and if so, for any specific purpose?

Thanks

I plan to start using mine more going forward to show off anything I come up with. Its easier for me to post a photo in the message boards for any critiques or advice I may ask. Others use it for displaying their work and how they have progressed as a photographer

i used it mostly to share here the pictures i take
i never looked at it as my portfolio (i do not actually have a batter one hehe)

good reminder to go through and clean a bit

cheers and welcome to the site

the only reason i used them is to easily share pics in the forums or in side challenges.

i dont really see any other reason since there are a myriad of free sites that act as portfolio with far better features and reach.

if i upload a picture here, no one will see it if i dont show it. if i upload to 500px for instance it will get a 100 vies in a few days.

i really think this place needs to spend more time on that aspect in order to attract more members. i.e. a portfolio system with a feed that people can like photos that is more interactive.

mainly i come here for the forums, not the pictures (except the contests).

True with the fact that when a picture is uploaded who knows about it but only you?

That would be a huge improvement to see what others uploaded and share in the comments even if they don't enter in challenges. I would upload more to my portfolio, but we are only alloted a certain size space too, so have to be careful when you do upload to side challenges, and other thread pictures that you upload the smallest size possible.

I won't ever use mine for a public shared portfolio only because a lot of my challenge entries were really bad and not my best work, but its fun to have it for the side challenges, if there is something I want to share or need help with. I have 500px for my best of my best, which is not a lot "yet" and I have google plus for my others.

Once you upload to a challenge you can NEVER ever delete those pictures.. so I have a special folder just for those pictures.

I have started putting mine in folders trying to organize them such as 2014 challenges, 2015 challenges and the like

If you would like to see what's been uploaded recently just go to photos/browse/recently uploaded.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I am going to post up a couple, just to see if there are any comments. I haven't looked into the 'side challenges' yet. I may need to do that. I use a modeling site for my portfolio of studio portraits that I have done, but as an ametuer, I haven't done much besides FB for sharing some of my shots with family and friends.

You'll need to use your DPC Portfolio if you want to post any prints for sale.

Maybe giving out a bit more portfolio space could be the next BIG move for DPC.
I have deleting images to make room in my workshop it screws up the forum when the pic's disappear.

If you want people to look at and comment on your images, you'll have better luck if you create a thread for that in the forums (under Community, Forums, then go to the Photography Discussion). If you just load into your portfolio and wait for comments, you'll be waiting a long time :)

You can also post to a generic thread to see what responses are out there. Here is an example "Add your 'NEW' uploaded image" or which ever version is current since there are so many photos uploaded.

If you want comments on a particular photo create a thread in the Individual Photo Discussion section and post a thumbnail and the reason you're asking/posting ...

Side challenges here are a good way to connect with other DPC people and to share comments and photos. Having the portfolio, and using the "workshop" makes that a lot easier.
I also used to use my DPC portfolio to help me locate photos in my computer files, by using the date that I put them on DPC. More recently, I have been adding searchable keywords to groups of images when I download them from the camera.

you'd think after all these years this issue would be addressed. There is the key for increasing membership and participants.

The ability to create a thread and post it on the front page asking people to "Please look at this picture" isn't "addressing the issue"?

Portfolio portion is just for premium members (Paid Members) of DP Challenge. Free members are not allowed to use this feature.

I don't use "portfolio". For this I have separate website and here I'm just communicating.

I'm not sure what you mean by an "issue". Are you suggesting that anytime someone uploaded an image, it would show up on the front page?

But regarding the portfolio question, I don't use the portfolio on DPC for anything other than DPC. At most, I'll link to it when I want to share a challenge entry somewhere else. Otherwise, I only upload images somehow related to DPC. If I've created a series I want other DPCers to view, I'll post a thread and a link to that gallery in DPC. Not having a portfolio makes it more cumbersome to discuss images in the forums, but it's not impossible.

I don't think that's always true. I get comments on things I put in my Portfolio that I haven't "promoted." Not pages worth, but over time, they do come...
