Inspired by several people here on the site, I tried to use an old 50-mm Canon FD-lens for taking macro pictures. Here's what I managed:

This flower is about 2cm in reality, so the macro function works great. However, I have two problems with this setup:
- I get quite heavy vignetting. This picture is taken at f=21mm, cropped left and right, but even at the longest focal length of my F717 I still get darker corners. Is this normal?
- Focusing is terribly difficult. I have to get as close as 1 cm to be able to focus at all, and the range in which it is possible to focus is extremely small. Any suggestions how to handle this?

Thanks for any input you can give!

Yes, it is. Just make sure that there is enough space around your subject to do a rectangular crop later.

You should switch the focusing to manual and then set focus to infinity. You then focus by moving either the camera or the subject back and forth - there are special macro focusing rails that will make this much easier.

Also make sure the 50mm lens aperture is set to wide open, and you should start by setting the focus on the 50mnm lens to infinity (this will probably geve best results).

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering whether the focus on the 50mm would help or not, I'll try that.

Shot these today with a stunned fly. These are cropped and resized, no other edits.

How do you stun a fly, with a stun-gun? Just curious how everybody is getting these incredible insect shots, for me it's impossible to get the focus right with anything that's moving (even a flower in a slight breeze is a nightmare to focus on).
