is your camera on auto focus? usually little switch on side of camera, can you manual focus? you might have a dud lens return to shop for refund

Make sure the aperture ring on the lens is set to f/22. It's in orange. If the aperture ring isn't set to that the camera will assume you're using the lens in full manual, and disengages the auto focus as well.

That might help?

my ring is locked on f 22 and still will not auto focus. I'v searched the web for a solution and can not find one, its very frustrating lol

I'd check to make sure auto focus on the 1.8D is supported by your camera. It's the older version. The 1.8G is the newer model, and AF works on all the cameras, but the older D model does not.

Bohemka is correct. The D5300 doesn't have a built-in autofocus motor, so it won't autofocus lenses unless they have an internal autofocus motor themselves. The 50mm f/1.8 AF-D doesn't have an autofocus motor. You want the 50mm f1.8G AF-S.

As a general rule, unless the lens is an AF-S lens, it won't autofocus on your body. AF-S is the label they give t lenses with an autofocus motor.
