Didn't see a score thread yet, so might as well start one.
So far I like what I see:

I'm a little surprised at how this is being received.

And at the same time of receiving my membership renewal. Not that I'm really that fussed with scores but I feel it might be a time for a break |

My score is all over the place. I've hit 6.7 and 5.7 twice already. |

My score started low (not as low as I expected) and has climbed gently to 5.5. That's 1.5 higher than I had hoped, although i do like my entry. I love doing portrait photography but I didn't get a chance to do a proper one for this challenge.
I haven't seen one photo in this challenge yet, and i expect there should be some nice ones! |

Can I get help please? I'm having trouble voting on this challenge... As far as I know, a portrait photo is one of the head and shoulders of the subject. I see many photos which are of the whole person, and often of more than one person. Also, a lot are in-the-moment or candid shots. Isn't portraiture posed? Or are some people interpreting the challenge as a photo of the environment of a subject in portrait orientation? What's going on here? Isn't this what the challenge is talking about:

Nicht,
That is the classical meaning of the term. DPC does tend to go off-track and get imaginative .
I'd read the description again, and think of all the ways that it could possibly be interpreted, and then go through the challenge entries again...
Either that, or if I'm not in a good mood, I might just go brutalize people for being too damned creative. :D |

Thanks. I started trying again, but there is a photo of something I don't expect in a portrait - even if a portrait does not include a face, the feature must define the person. I'm really struggling to vote. I'll try what you're doing. I think I'm going to have to re-vote all the ones I've voted on. Let's see.

I understand. I have hell with it... I usually end up handing out at least a couple of DNMC votes in each challenge.
I do try, I really do - but sometimes the connection is just too tenous for me, or too obscured, or... whatever... Trust me, the best move is to always follow your head AND your heart when voting. If you feel it's not right, then, by all means do vote it lower, you're the voter, and you're always right. (yes, I really do think it's impossible for the voter to be wrong, unless they're intentionally being wrong, but that's another matter)

Interesting that a bag head comment has been deleted on my entry and my score has started dropping quite a bit since the question of what is an Environmental Portrait was raised
Just vote how you interpret the challenge. Don't let others influence you |

I did a bit of research and thinking. A portrait is defined by the photographer and the sitter, it seems (in other words, has no exact definition; rather a classical definition). A portrait does not necessarily need to be of the head and shoulders, nor does it need to necessarily contain a face. Important is (or could be) a defining feature of the subject. Environmental Portrait is generally of the subject doing something, such as a painter painting. Children in a playground would also be a good example.
To me, portrait needs to contain a subject (which could be collective) which needs to be a person. For environmental portrait, if the subject is a group, then the group must conform; in other words they must be doing the same thing or be achieving the same goal. For the challenge, I tried to take into account different interpretations that other photographers might have had, but if a defining feature (subject) or photographic style was just too far a stretch, then I voted on the quality of the photo (in my opinion), but upper limited the score to 5.
I have certainly learned a great deal from this challenge so far! I only wish there had been more than double the number of entries. I really think a lot of personal style has come out in the photos entered (more so than usual, at least). |

I would say not necessarily. While you are right that portrait means what you say, there is also the whole body portrait which is included under portrait in a more general sense.

Probably it is, but then I would say that some portraits work because they seem natural, not posed. Whether they were actually posed, or candid shots, is not so relevant to me with those portraits. Especially with the environmental portraits I would say there are smooth transitions.

As for the challenge, I saw shots that clearly fit my idea of an environmental portrait, then there are those where I at first look would have said, no way, but then thinking it over and saying - well, why not, it's a different look at the challenge, and then there are some where I feel that even with some leeway they don't fit the challenge. And that of course influenced my voting.

Thank you. I agree completely. Like I've said - I have leaned a great deal so far from this challenge. I think environmental portrait stretches what is portrait even further, and photos which are not posed are actually extremely fitting to the challenge. |
