Got mine! A very nice travel tripod ... light as a feather (at least a feather weighing 2.5 lbs), and nice and small. Legs are thin but sturdy, and the twist locks are easier than I anticipated coming from flip lock style tripods. And what a steal...it looks like this tripod does indeed normally sell for $399...checked several places and that's the price now!)

Another chance for a carbon travel tripod..

A slightly different model this time:

Oben CT-3431 Carbon Fiber Tripod With BE-108T Ball Head--$179.95

B&H only...deal ends in 15 hours.

Load Capacity: 8.8 lb
Maximum Height: 59.5"
Lightweight: 2.5 lb
Folds Down to 17"

I really like the one from the other deal, the similar model (the 3531, same head). Grab it while you can! The ballhead alone is worth $75 on B&H.

Looks interesting...any downsides to this tripod? You mention that you bought a similar one. Sturdy enough for a d800 landscape rig?

I haven't really had it out to shoot yet. I was just in general happy with the size and weight, and that it's Arca Swiss.

It's only rated to 8.8 lbs, so I'd say you'd be fine if you stay under that, which most SLR landscape wides would certainly be. Not sure about weight of a say a Nikon 810 + 14-24 + Lee Filter system.

The tripod has thin legs, especially compared to my Manfrotto 055C (carbon), which is a lightweight beast but big. It does have a retractable hook at the bottom of the column you can use for weight for stability. Pushing down on the tripod, I can certainly wiggle it. I can wiggle the 055C but much much less. However, because it's carbon fiber, any vibrations should quickly dissipate.

For fun I just did a quick test. I put my D600 on it, with my 70-200 2.8 without the tripod collar (just because it wasn't on at the time). But this is the most unbalanced config I could think of. Then I took some long exposures--as much as 6 seconds. They all came out sharp (well at F22 a bit softer than I think it would have been if I stuck a ND filter on and shot again). But no indication of motion blur. For these tests I used the self timer...my remote shutter release wasn't handy. I wouldn't hand press the shutter with this tripod if you want stability. It's not hard to shake it when manually pressing the shutter. [Note: I didn't think to turn off VR in this quick test]. But I always use a remote or the self timer.

The tripod head (mine has the BE-108T as well) worked very well even with the 70-200 F2,8, locking it in place beautifully--there was no creep at all. The tripod seemed to be sturdy enough holding it...I wasn't worried about it tipping.

I just looked and it's already sold out...so if you didn't buy, and want to, you'll have to wait until next time! Maybe they'll put one of the heavier duty ones on sale!

Opteka 6.5 Fisheye on Amazon.

I have the Rokinon version of this lens and it's a really fun lens. Optics are pretty good. The Nikon and Sony version are the same price.

olympus 12-40 f/2.8, $639.

Reconditioned, from the Olympus website. Price is considerably cheaper than what they're going for on the used market. They seem to dump a few more onto the site every couple of days, so if they're out, bookmark the page and be patient.
