I need some help guys! I currently own a canon a80 and its great but I'm in search of my first digital slr. Does anyone have any recommendations. I have about a 1400 spending limit. Right now I'm looking at the Canon digital-rebel,Canon 10d, and the Nikon d70. Any help would be great. Thanks.

If that was my budget, I'd accept nothing less than the new Canon 20d.

There are other manufacturers DSLRs to consider as well, such as the E1 from Olympus (lenses cost lots, though) and Pentax (*istD). Minolta is coming out with theirs soon too, which has IS built into the camera body.

If you could afford to stretch your budget, the 20D seems the best choice. If not, I'd go with the D70 and spend the rest on lenses and accessories (tripods, extra battery, more memory, etc..)

Best advice to give is to go out to a local camera store and try out each camera.

Edited for typo.

With a $1400 limit, I'd probably go with the Digital Rebel and buy 1 or 2 nice lenses (not the shitty kit lens) and some nice memory. Quality lenses and accessories are a better investment as they will stick with you as you upgrade bodies.

If you decide you have outgrown the Digital Rebel down the road and want to move to a 20d/1d, you'll have some really nice accessories that'll work with them.

A 20D is definitely a nice camera, but $1400 won't buy you a 20D and all the bits you need. If you have $1400 that will creep up to $2000 in a few months, then the 20D may be the way to go. Otherwise you may have to opt for a cheaper DSLR..

i keep hearing about the 20d but i looked up some reviews on cnet.com and according to them the d70 has it beat by a long shot. I just dont know about nikon i heard that their lenses are usually more expensive.

With all due respect to the good people at cnet.com, they are not famed for the excellence of their Camera reviews. I've read a couple that are nothing short of laughable. If you want reviews go here: //www.dpreview.com or here: //www.steves-digicams.com/

yeah the 20d is a good suggestion, except with 1400 dollars, you only get a body.. .still need to buy lenses.. also, if i'm not mistaken, isn't the 20d body retailing for 1499 or something like that? with a 1400 dollar budget you're better off with a drebel, or a d70, or a used 10d with a lense (and personally i think the d70 would be the best choice of those 3 right now). that would be my personal opinion.

I am looking too, but waiting just abit longer. Oly is coming out with a consumer e-series DSLR and more lenses from Zuiko and Sigma. All supposed to be announced EOM - Priced to compete with the 300d. And someone else mentioned the Minolta Maxim 7 digital. The DR looks great, but I really want to see these two before I make up my mind.

Here is a review by Ken Rockwell who eats, sleeps and breaths cameras. He has a great history and tries every camera he can get. He absolutely loves the D70 and would buy one over the D1X, D2H, D100, etc....

It's a great D70 article. If I were to replace my D100, I would go D70, no questions asked. My uncle sold his D1X for a D70 and a good driend shoots with a D70 as well. I have compared pics from their D70's with my D100 and they are awesome. Colors are superb!

circuitcity.com has new 10Ds for $1259.99. Depends on what lens group you want to go with. Canon, Nikon, etc. I love Canons lens line up and think my DR is great. Have my 20D on pre-order from Ritz.com. I will be using my DR as a backup.

Go with whatever lens group you feel is better and not necessarily the body features as you know in a year or two you will probably be upgrading anyway. Then you will have all of these nice lenses and accessories and only have to worry about the body purchase.

Good luck!!!

VERY GOOD POINT WACKY....ALL THIS HYPE ABOUT THE 20D HAS REALLY MADE ME DO A LOT MORE RESEARCH ON IT. So the lenses that come with the rebel and the 10d arent that great? Atleast thats what im hearing....any suggestions on what lense to buy if i were to go with the 10d or rebel?

D2X? Sign me up. That camera doesn't exsist yet.

I love the solidity of my D1X, even looking at pictures of the D70 makes me think it's not going to survive a single fall. Just my opinion. Don't forget I still need to justify paying 3x the cost of a D70. ;)

I have the Tamron 28-75 XR Di which is my favorite lens. It runs about $400. However, there are other Canon lenses such as the 28-105mm (I think) that isn't so pricey but is an awesome lens from what I hear. I also have a Sigma 28-200mm which I really like and have gotten some really great sharp pictures with. I think I only paid like $169.00 for this online somewhere.

I think my next lens will probably be the Canon 70-200mm F/4 L which everyone says is a really awesome lens.

Oh, I can't forget the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. I have the f/1.8 version and paid less than a hundred bucks for it. It is an awesome prime lens!!!

I already had a Canon 35mm SLR and a few lenses which pretty much made up my mind as to which DSLR to get. However, if I didn't have any lenses to start with, I think I would still go Canon. That's just my preference though.

Whatever you get I would make sure that it has an optional vertical grip. Not sure if the D70 does or not. I have it for my DR and love it. Have never taken it off since putting it on. Many don't like the weight but I really like the extra weight added by the grip. I have fairly large hands so it really makes the camera lots more comfortable in my hand. I always feel like I have a secure grip of the camera with the grip and I didn't always have that feeling before adding the grip. The grip will most likely be the first thing I buy for my new 20D as soon as I know where the grip for the 20D is being offered.

Again, good luck. I'm sure you will love your new toy regardless of which way you go.

The 10D doesn't come with a lens (and may not be worth the $500 difference over a Rebel for a "temporary" camera). The kit lens for the Rebel is decent, but not great. The new lenses announced with the 20D might be your best bet.

For now, I would opt for the Digital Rebel body, a fast 512MB card and the new 17-85mm stabilized EF-S lens (though it's not yet available). That'll give you the most bang for the buck, plenty of versatility, and still keep you under budget. Six months from now (or whenever), you can eBay the Rebel for nearly what you paid and upgrade to the 20D with all your existing lenses, etc. By then, you'll know what you're getting into before you blow the extra cash.

Well, they are the only ones I've seen say anything even remotely similar to that.

Looking in reviews in general I see the 10D and the D70 coming neck and neck all the time, both ahead of the D100 and 300D by a noticable amount.

Looking in the printed press I am seeing the 10D usually winning the gold award, the D70 the silver, but by so little it makes no difference.

Overall I doubt there is anything between the two, both have their pros and cons and are next to impossible to put one ahead of the other, as something that is important on one camera to one person may not matter to the next. I think in the end it comes down to what glass you have between those two.

However, the 20D seems to be a huge step above the 10D, which all the in depth reviews compare it to. Check out DPReview or Steve's Digicams I think both had multi page in depth reviews (of pre-release model). If the step forward from the 10D is as big as it looks, and realistically with the D70 and 10D being pretty much neck and neck, I can't see the D70 matching the 20D for a number of reasons and expect Nikon will release something new later in the year to combat that.

Sounds like cnet haven't really looked into it if you ask me, which would not be a first for that bunch.

Well, I would recommend a faster lens than those that come with the rebel/10d. I bought a Canon 28-105mm USM lens and it has served me well but for some reason the focus ring is crapping out on me. Here's what I'll be getting to replace it //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=264304&is=GREY

Any word on this new Olympus E-series consumer camera as far as is it going to be part of the 4/3rds system, with those Zuiko lenses, or will it be along the lines of the old E10/E20 cameras, with a 2/3rd inch CCD and fixed lense?
