I like to carry my camera as a lumbar/fanny pack. At least that worked for my G2. I don't know how feasible that will be with an SLR.
Anyone have experience with this?

You may also want to take a look at Crumpler.
The good thing about them is that they look good and don't scream "Hey! I'm a photo bag! Steal me!" quite so loud ;) They're Australian, but available in most other countries too.

I use a Mountainsmith lumbar pack and love it. They are very popular with the sports photographers.
Mountainsmith Tour Pack
I also cut to fit some compression foam and lined the bottom to help protect a lens or any equipment that I hav inside when setting it down.
You can also use a Domke Insert to help protect the contents. |

Jason, I found this bag on ebags, but they don't show you the inside and neither does the mountainsmith site. Are there any included fittings to hold the camera in place, or do you have to buy all the extra stuff you mention? It gets kind of expensive if you have to pay for the inserts...

I have been using this type of waist pack for years. Mine is made of cloth and I recolored it black. The center pouch has plenty of room for my digital SLR Rebel xsi. I even place a portable tripod that collapses to 9 1/2 inches. I use the two side pockets for 70-300mm zoom, and 10-24mm zoom. Other pockets available for batteries, filters, lense cloth and cleaner, storage, etc.
I prefer wearing this on my belly for easy access.
Unfortunately newer versions of this bag are not cloth and cannot be recolored.

| I have both the mountainsmith Tour and Day lumbar packs. The Tour was just a bit too small for me, so I got the Day sized one. Mountainsmith also makes a lumbar camera bag--fully padded, etc. It is a little boxy, and would not double as a hiking bag only. But it is well made. |
