The poor guy never stood a chance. These gangs are so well organised that, even if you realise something is going on, you can't do a thing about it.
Even keeping your gear in a bag wouldn't help when people like these cross your path.

Not true that there was nothing he could do.
Granted, he did realize it too late, but that's the part you can do. Keep your head on a swivel, look around you - take notice of who is around you, and especially take notice if they're taking notice of you.
There are things you can absolutely do to keep yourself safer in these situations, and I think it's important for all of us to remember that.
I speak with experience - I go to spots that are pretty seedy sometimes to shoot - and there have been plenty of occasions where I've been scoped out, and I was aware that I was being scoped out.
Simple awareness is the biggest key to your safety - since they knew I wasn't going to be caught unaware, so far I have been able to avoid any real trouble on the street, but I have no doubt that if I had looked the part of the victim, and allowed myself to be caught unaware, they would have been glad to lighten my load for me.
Of course, that same awareness is also pretty helpful when it's the hood of a car you're looking to avoid, instead of just hoodlums. |

it's Russia! Didn't you see "A Good day to Die Hard?" Tourists whining to the cops about a stolen lens?

My cousin got robbed at a family picnic. They took his Mark II and 50mm 1.2. The police recovered everything from a shop after they caught the crooks and the whole lot had been sold at about 150 dollars 0.o
Later on everyone was cracking up that it was robbers that really got robbed. |

When I went to rome, I bought a small lock and just locked the zippers together on the backback. I figured it was kind of silly to have people have easy access to something on my back, when I couldn't really do anything about it. The lock would make it a little more difficult in this case, and maybe put them in search of someone else.

| After watching this video I felt like the video and the action was planned otherwise how would a few folks who would know that someone is recording and perform the action and show their faces so that they can be pulled out easily. |
