I guess I don't read the forums enough to associate you with "drama" Richard. I just know you as a good shooter that gives honest and highly valuable feedback among other things that have made you an asset to the DPC community.
I totally understand moving on to other things that are keeping you busy as I am in the same boat myself. I don't think I will participate in many challenges here anymore as I need to invest my time elsewhere. But I plan to stay in touch with this great community of people even if I don't compete much and hope you will do the same.
Best of luck to you moving forward Richard, and please stay in touch.

I'm no fan of the Expert Editing either, it's pretty far-removed from photography. But maybe my opinion will change with time. |

"Only" 20 species? :-)

That's a pretty good tally of species in 90 minutes with 17 people in the group. |
I meant the quotation marks and smiley to denote sarcasm -- I was in fact mightily impressed by your tally today, especially since I'm so bad at IDing birds myself. |

I was constantly amazed in following you (and the other participants) in the recent avian side-challenge ... to find and photograph nearly 100 different birds in a mere month would have seemed unbelievable if you'd asked before the challenge started.
Remember you can have fun here too, if you take your own advice and post what you love, and stop caring what other people think about it. |
That's a pretty good tally of species in 90 minutes with 17 people in the group. We did get to see a Green-tailed Towhee, which just migrated here from Central America.
I'm about to publish a book on Birds of Rocky Mountain National Park. I'm just about there.
My decision to halt participation at DPC is sitting very well with me. I'm energized by the thought of redirecting my energies and sharply reducing the petty aggravations. |
oooh... cool little guy!!
20 species is pretty impressive. I think I'd need to learn the bird calls. My eyes are too lousy to actually see most of them on bird walks. That's why the 400mm helps. :)
I'm sorry that DPC has been so hard, Richard. You have beautiful work and insightful comments.

...and that hardness is strictly an issue of perception. Others have been treated more harshly and are still here.
There is not doubt whatsoever that hahn23 is a very accomplished photographer, but I am of the opinion that he reaped what he sowed.
Call me harsh if you will, but that is my view in this matter.

As I see it, the total lack of any sense of humour leads to hahn's aggravation with me. I don't blame him, it's probably one part of the brain not sending a signal to some other part.

Dang, I didn't see this until just now. Wow. My fault, I guess. I have the same effect on people at Black Jack tables. I'll have to try to figure out what Beetle and beatabg did. Right now it looks to me like it's because their user names are similar, and similar names piss me off too, so I can understand that.
Judging by all the sorrowful goodbyes on hahn's bye bye thread, I should probably make an apology thread to express my remorse for the way I've wronged DPC.

Yeah, but it's aggravating because we can't calculate it because of
a stupid "divide by zero" error. At least buy a months worth every now and then. |

I will note that some people continue to throw punches, even when I'm done. Their hatred is so deeply seeded. Sure does confirm my decision to cut ties with DPC. But, I forgive them. I don't carry any grudges. I'm just really glad I don't have to associate with them anymore. |

Richard, I'm sorry that you felt the need to leave. There aren't many bird photogs here and I'm sorry that we're losing you. Thanks for your help and insight into my favorite subjects. |

Sad to see you go man. Your comments are F**king fantastic if I do say so myself... I should tell you that I completely understand why you are leaving. The underlying tone of this website has become surprisingly negative in my opinion. I really think it starts at the top and trickles down. The reality is, Langdon really doesn't give two ShIItes about this site, and it's starting to wear thin on those who have been here awhile. I mean, how many good photographers have to leave before someone says, "Hey, why are the veterans leaving?"
Think about it, we had a challenge for "Internet Memes" with no F**king text allowed... Really??? No text??? Why not have a Star trails challenge run in minimal??? This site has become so aggravating that it hardly becomes worth it, then to top it off, you get ripped in the forums when you're not around? I get it man... totally... That's why I pretty much stay out of the forums.
I just hope you'll stop in every once in a while to give comments. If not, throw down an email or contact to hook me up with some honest critiques. It seems these days people here are even afraid to give honest critiques because of the fear of an angry PM...
As for me, I can't help but feel like I'm close to where you're at. Frustrated and aggravated... I've come to the point where, outside of TPL, I no longer shoot for this site. If I happen to have shot something that week that fits a challenge, great, I'll enter it... but if not, I'm not going out of my way. The TPL kinda pissed me off in a sense that you have allot of people DONATING their time to something that Langdon profits from, and getting nothing in return. I suppose it's their time to donate, and they are certainly better people than I am, but I can't help but be angry at the fact that someone is profiting from their contribution... I hope they are at least getting free memberships out of the deal... If not, we should all be chipping in to hook them up...
Anyway, best of luck in your new adventures. I'm starting to branch out myself. You never know, you may find your way back here at some point... if there is anything left to come back to... |

No worries on those fronts guys.
We get nothing in terms of consideration from the site, but what we do get is even better: a more active community, and a whole lot of excitement and fun.
WTF, why not ya know?
So don't let it bother ya, we're getting just what we wanted, and it's awesome. |

Expert is still very photographic in nature. |
