My brother is a Habs fan, but lives in the USA. He wants to watch playoff hockey on a Canadian network, because American announcers are clueless.
I want to set up a proxy server on my PC for him.
Any suggestions on software?
1. Lightweight, easy on system resources.
2. Windows 7 Home.
3. A way to ensure only my brother is able to use the PC as a proxy.

Media Hint, best add-on in existence
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/media-hint/
I use it for Pandora from Canada and from what it says, "This extension allows you to enjoy The Fun Stuff from any country!"...
sets up in about 2 seconds
eta: mis-read your original post, didn't see that you wanted to do a proxy from your computer. either way, if he's looking to stream from a canadian website than media hint should do the trick

That makes more sense, and I don't have to lift a finger.

Despite the fact that I don't know what a Hab is...I think your brother wants to watch streaming video through a Canadian proxy, right?
I'm pretty sure your home internet won't have enough outbound bandwidth to proxy streaming video. If you have business class internet, you might be able to run a proxy server. None of the free proxy servers on the internet are going to have enough bandwidth either. You might be able to find a paid proxy site and stream through that. My company's net nanny blocks all of that stuff so I can't help from work...but googling Canada proxy server might get you what you want. |

Habs would be a reference to the Montreal Canadiens NHL hockey team. |

I have 30mbps down / 2mbps up. My brother lives in the sticks, ans so only has 2mbps down. He's aware of what he needs, specs-wise, to view the stream. He's much more tech-savvy than I.

I sent him the media-hint link that Dudski posted. It would be a much more elegant solution if it works for him.

The Canadian and former NHL players that announce in the US are clueless? Come on. It's because he lives in the wrong market, isn't it. |

My brother tried it last night:
"i don't think it worked last night... some bitch voice just kept saying, "this feature is not currently available", and that's it... so... i don't know if that means i'm getting blocked, or if they were having issues... :/"

oh well, worth a try.
I know it works for us Canadians to be able to access stuff like Pandora and Netflix US etc. |

When I lived in Germany I would use firstrow and other similar sites to watch international sports not televised there. It was really hit or miss, but it worked often enough. Can't predict the broadcasters, normally there are a few to choose from though. |

I'll get it set up through my PC at home. FreeProxy will probably be good enough.

Ouch. I heard the post ring from here on that fourth goal.
But no bad blood here, my friend. I'm a Rangers fan. |

It makes me sick. It's a curse. :-(
Got the proxy set up, running, & bro is testing it out. Turns out he just wanted to make sure he didn't miss any games that weren't broadcast in the USA, not as dramatic as I made it out to be. But of course I'm a drama queen, as you all know.

You better hope your post doesn't prove a curse instead ... AFAIK Murphy's Law transcends international boundaries ... :-( |

Good thing you quoted it, then, so I can't delete it. ;-P
Will you at least visit me in prison?

I lack the required security clearance. Besides, I try to make it a practice to never enter a prison, jail, or hospital voluntarily -- you never know when they'll decide to keep you ... :-) |
