Just noticed my membership is coming up for renewal next month. Is there anything coming down the pipe in terms of changes in format or expanded ideas that would make it worth renewing membership ? Things seem to have pretty much stayed them same for the last year or so. Any plans to evolve and improve, other than the print side of things that I'm not interested in ?

I enjoy DPC a lot, I really do.
But for me right now, the only reason to renew is DPC Prints.
I think it would be nice to see some new elements introduced to DPC to keep it fresh and exciting.
Trouble is there are those who fear that anything new might dilute the existing. Member challenges haven't diluted interest in Open ones though have they?
I think it would be great to have some kind of smaller challenge system, either a case of 5 challenges a month and you can enter only one, or perhaps a private challenge system where people can set up invitation only challenges as they wish.
I believe that latter idea has been mooted before.
I understand the fear of change as there is always fear that a change may spoil rather than improve.
But sometimes one needs to change in order not to stagnate.
Enough rambling.
For now, DPC Prints justifies my membership to me.

Member challenges alone justify membership for me.. but remember, I'm very new at the member game.

I love being able to take part in two challenges a week.. for now :)

However, I always like to see improvements, as long as they aren't just arbitrarily changed for the sake of it.

Encouraging this site to stay alive with my (small) contribution was my best motivation to be a member, honestly

Well, I'm evolving and, hopefully, improving as time goes by. You'll want to stick around to see that, won't you? :)

Seriously, what kind(s) of changes were you hoping for?

New inspiration, expanded horizons, exciting new members with radically interesting styles, new challenges, growth, that kind of thing. Things seem pretty much the same as when the member challenge and open challenge was introduced, same number of entries, mostly the same entrants.

That might not be up to DPC, but just a matter of patience as more people come across the site.

Well, they do keep promising to look at the DPC website after the big update to DPCPrints is finished (should be soon), but I haven't heard anything about what kind of improvements are likely. Of course, I also haven't heard much about what they are working on with the prints side of things either.

If you all know it so well Gordon, why don't you start your own site then? After all - as you proudly announced in other threads- you are a doctor and you do know how to operate a PDA in Houston.

You have been behaving like a complete ***hole in the forums lately and I think threatning not to renew your membership is very childish. After all, before competing on this site you where a complete nobody!
Instead of putting all your energy in pointless discussions, I suggest you use it to improve your skills in photography, because I haven't seen much improvement in that lately!

Next week I plan to revolutionize the modern digital photograph and shatter the glass ceiling of mediocrity with newfound creative prowess...depending on if I like the new challenge topic on Tuesday.

Is that enough. :P

so where did I 'threaten not to renew my membership' ? I asked for information on the future of the site. Almost forgot. I'm still a complete nobody...

I enjoy coming in here to relax. That alone is worth $25 to support this great site.

Its only 25 bucks ... most people spend double that one night out in a bar. I prefer to better spend my time (and money) and I will renew my membership in October. I want the option of having Prints, Member Challenges, and of course the almighty update button. I am looking forward to seeing some new changes in the future but its not something that will determine my stay here .. ;)

I am not sure where you are going with that post, but I think its way out of line. And to question his photography skills is just silly.

I'm absolutly new to DPC but not new to Digital Imagery...the sad thing about "forums" is that there are some idiots..and some really talentless people..the good thing about "forums" is that there is some awsome people...and awsome talent

Heck, what is $25/ year to learn to use your digital camera better when we all spent anywhere from $300 on up to buy it in the first place. I am not a member yet, but I plan on becoming one very soon. The challenges really help a person think outside the box in terms of trying things that are not normally within the scope of their photography skill set. It is definitely stretching.

Gordon, Kavey,
I too would love to see some new & exciting things here, and I'm confident that we will. Making major changes is not something to be taken lightly though, since the basic formula is certainly a winning one.
As another fairly long-time member (June '02) I sometimes have to step back & realize that what seems old hat & formulaic to me does not seem so to new users/members. We need to add some depth & breadth to keep us "old farts" challenged and engaged, though, while continuing to provide the basic, winning formula for those newer to the site.
IMO, this can only be a win; we really need to retain the great talent that has blossomed here, and attract even more highly-talented photogs.
Gordon, I think that your contribution to discussions and challenges here has helped to raise the bar here on DPC; your insight has certainly helped me. I hope that you see enough value to stick around; I agree with other posters that the $25 is more than worth it just for the opportunity to drop in, relax & enjoy some good photog-related (and sometimes unrelated) banter.

My 2¢

You are a big encouragement to me for what its worth. You gave me some advice on another thread that really made me think.. and grow. When I was questioning how to take candids without feeling like a voyeur you said:

"Get a 50mm or 24mm lens - take great candids, be involved, not a voyeur. The best candid images make you feel you are right in the action (i.e., wideangle or normal lenses) rather than some passive observer from a distance.

Most of the 'classic' candid photographers used essentially a normal lens, on a rangefinder camera. That would be roughly a 30mm lens on the 300D.

Be a participant not a voyeur, and all the issues you describe go away."

I took this to heart and it has made a difference. Thanks :)

It might not be the reason you are looking for to renew, but you are an asset to this site and from my selfish viewpoint, thats one good reason for you to renew :)

Ummm... wow? I was just telling my wife yesterday that I really liked the DPC forums because people tend to act in a mature and helpful manner here. I guess parts of this thread are just an exception?

Gordon - Your photographs have been an inspiration for me, but you seem to have outgrown this site. That's great news! You just have to figure out what's next for you. I sincerely hope you're as successful with that as you have been here.

Remie - You've been an inspiration to me too, but your reply struck me as way out of line for this thread. Maybe it's cultural differences or some misunderstanding, but lashing out at someone like that is never going to help either person. I hope your focus in the future continues to be on creating great photographs.

Thanks to both of you for sharing such outstanding photographs with the rest of us.

Where on the site can you find out when my membership is due?
